Elizabeth Fairchild Martindale and
Harry Turner Martindale '27

A generous endowment from the Martindales in 1980 helped establish the Center that bears their name. Evidence of their enduring support of private education can be found throughout the Lehigh University Campus.

Among the other contributions this couple has endowed: the E.W. Fairchild Chair in American Studies, named in memory of Mrs. Martindale's father; the E.W. Fairchild Fellowship in American Literature; the E.W. Fairchild Visiting Writer; the Harry and Elizabeth Martindale Scholarships to benefit Lehigh University students; and the E.W. Fairchild Library Fund. They provided the major gift toward establishing the Fairchild-Martindale Library and Computing Center, and in 1987 established the Paul J. Franz Jr. Chair in University Administration.

In the College of Business and Economics, the Martindales, with Wight Martindale Jr., also initiated the Wight Martindale Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Harry's brother '29.

Until his retirement in 1970, Harry Martindale served as vice-president of Fairchild Publications on the West Coast, directing the production of a group of publications in fields ranging from fashion, textiles, and foods, to metals, appliances, energy, and computers.

Mr. Martindale also has given generously of his time, having served as a regional vice president of the Alumni Association and a member of the national Annual Giving Committee. A recipient of the New York Lehigh Club's prestigious L-in-Life Award, he served as first chairman of the Tower Society, which appropriately honors those alumni and friends who have given, or made plans to give, to Lehigh's endowment fund.

In 1984 the Martindales were both awarded honorary degrees by the University. Elizabeth Fairchild Martindale died in June 1997.
