Assistive Technologies in LTS
As part of the university-wide Disability Advisory Committee efforts, LTS has undertaken several initiatives to enhance access to assistive technologies and to promote universal access to resources. A summary of these initiatives is below:
- Seminar on Accessible Web design for campus Web developers. Campus Web designers can take a seminar to learn about Web page design techniques to allow users with low vision and other disabilities who utilize screen readers with voice synthesizers. The seminar is offered on 10/10 and you can sign up at http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/ .
- Web design consultations. Any campus unit can request a consultation and evaluation of its Web pages. Knowledgable staff will make suggestions on improving the accessibility of Web services/pages. For more information contact the help desk at 8-HELP.
- New and improved Kurzweil 3000 PC software. This software offers advanced reading technology for Lehigh students with learning difficulties and low vision, and the new version will be available November 1. For more information on this software and use policies, contact Academic Support Services for Students with Disabilities at 8-4152.
- A CCTV device. This device is a video magnifier available for students with low vision to use at the library or in a classroom. The device uses a video camera to project a magnified image of a book or blackboard to a computer monitor. For more information contact the help desk.
- Electronic textbooks. LTS is working with Academic Support Services for Students with Disabilities to make electronic resources and textbooks available to students who qualifying disabilities. For more information contact the help desk.
- Strengthened support. Library staff have received training in the use of the assistive technologies available in the library and can provide assistance with basic use.
