So you want Lehigh to fix your home computer?

The fact that you are a Lehigh employee does not mean that Lehigh will fix your home computer. In fact, most employees do not qualify for LTS support of your privately-owned home PC.

LTS may provide time-as-available support for home PCs only when they are used by Lehigh employees “conducting University Business at home”. Please note that the PC must be delivered to LTS offices and Computing consultants are not authorized to make home visits (off campus) to address computer support questions/repairs. PC owners are responsible for transporting computer hardware to and from LTS offices.

What is the official definition of “conducting University Business at home?”

As defined by Human Resources, an employee is considered to be conducting University Business at home “when their supervisor specifically approves a work-at-home schedule. This schedule must be constant in nature (as opposed to a once in a while project).”

I work a standard workweek, but I also work extra from home. Do I qualify?

Probably not – Unless you work at home on a regular basis as part of your officially defined work schedule then according to Human Resources you don’t actually work at home since you are not specifically REQUIRED to.

I think I meet the qualifications for LTS home PC support. How do I request support?

Non-faculty members should ask their supervisor to contact a LTS Computing Consultant on your behalf. He/she must indicate that you indeed work at home as part of your officially defined work schedule. Faculty members should contact their Computing Consultant directly.

Will LTS help me with my home network?

No. We are unable to effectively provide home wireless networking support due the variety of Internet service providers, networking equipment, and associated issues.

What other options are available for help with my home PC if I don’t qualify as a work-at-home employee?

The Lehigh Valley is home to many computer repair shops. Although LTS does not endorse any of them we have compiled a list for your convenience:

This webpage is not an official policy statement. Rather, it is a simplification of the official LTS policy on PC Support. You can view the entire policy at http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/Cpolicies/NonLehigh.html but we think this page sums it up pretty well.
