Important changes to your Lehigh Email Account

Greetings from Library and Technology Services:

This email concerns upcoming changes to Lehigh email that will affect you.

For nearly twenty years Lehigh has provided an on-campus email server for faculty, staff, students, and affiliates such as retirees and spouses. Due to email security vulnerabilities increasing in locally-managed mail servers, we will be moving all Lehigh email accounts to Lehigh Gmail to take advantage of the widely recognized and extremely effective data security features of Gmail.

All retiree, spouse, and affiliate email accounts will be moved to Lehigh Gmail starting on Monday, July 10, 2017.

How will you be affected?

Many of you will be minimally affected.

  • After July 10, your Lehigh mail will be available via Lehigh Gmail. You will need to log in using a web browser from the Gmail link at lehigh.edu/google instead of using a local mail program (Thunderbird, Apple mail, etc.)
  • All of the mail and folders stored on Lehigh’s mail server will be migrated to Lehigh Gmail.
  • Mail stored locally on your hard drive will continue to be available for viewing only (no forwarding or replying) through Thunderbird, Apple mail, or other third-party email software you may use.
  • Your email contacts will *not* be migrated. If you wish to migrate your contacts, instructions can be found below.
  • If you are forwarding your mail to another account (e.g., Yahoo or a personal Gmail account), you will need to log in to Lehigh Gmail and set up forwarding to that account after the migration occurs. Instructions for setting up forwarding are at https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10957?hl=en
  • Any mobile devices you may use to read your Lehigh Gmail will need to be reconfigured to reflect this change. Settings and instructions for popular devices are listed below.

Getting help

Links to documentation and instructions are provided at the end of this announcement.

Due to the large volume of migrations, LTS will be unable to provide individual assistance in the use of Gmail, in setting up mobile devices, or in migrating contacts. If you need help, the instructions below can be provided to local tech support firms that you might engage for assistance. The setup required will depend on the number of computers and mobile devices that need to be configured.

LTS will send an email message reminder as the July 10 migration date approaches.
