Abstract:
The Lehigh University Mustard & Cheese Collection is a pictorial history of Lehigh University’s drama society. This collection consists of 688 photographs and an assortment of playbills, posters, and newspaper clippings originally housed in seven numbered scrapbooks, documenting the organization’s history and the work involved in creating various theatre productions throughout the years. The stage crew and cast of players included not only students and faculty of Lehigh University but also the participation of other local institutions. The photographs generally highlight scenes of the various plays and production work such as set design and costume manufacturing. The assorted playbills record the people involved in each production and help describe parts of the organization’s development. While the scrapbooks contain mostly photographs and playbills, there are also newspaper clippings and other ephemera.

The collection was acquired by the Lehigh University Library on September 26, 1973 through the Mustard & Cheese Dramatics Club. H. Barrett Davis had donated the collection to the Club on November 17, 1972 with the intent on having the organization find a permanent home for the scrapbooks. Davis noted that many of the photographs in his collection are not present in these scrapbooks but are available as slides through Mustard & Cheese.

Historical Sketch:
The Mustard & Cheese Drama Society was formed following meetings by a group of Lehigh University students in 1884. They held their first meetings in the back room of Rennig’s Bar, led by the two Davis brothers, Richard Harding Davis and Charles Belmont Davis (both of no relation to Professor H. Barrett Davis). The students often invited actors who were then starring in regional productions, and Charles Belmont Davis suggested that the weekly gatherings be organized into a regular dramatic organization. The Club’s name comes from the refreshments served at their first meetings, a light menu of beer served with mustard and cheese. When the time came to decide on the name the group unanimously christened the organization as “The Mustard and Cheese Club.”

The first officers of the club were: President, A. S. Reeves; Business Manager, C. E. Clapp; Musical Director, H. S. Haines; Stage Manager, C. B. Davis. Reeves was known as the best looking and best-dressed man on campus, giving the new club a sense of respectability. Clapp was known for his talent at managing finances and was elected for that reason. Haines was chosen as Musical Director since he was the only member of the club who had rented a piano for his personal use. Charles B. Davis only accepted the position of Stage Manager after others had refused the post, others claiming that Davis was more suited since he attended more theatre productions than any other member.

Their first theatre production was titled “Child of Misfortune,” penned by Richard Harding Davis and produced in 1884. The general public first experienced their endeavors with the public performances of “‘Love and Money’ A Melo-Drama in One Act” and “‘Sir Dagobert and the Dragon’ A Romantic Extravaganza in Three Acts” at the Sun Inn in Bethlehem on April 10, 1885. Richard Harding Davis was the star of “Love and Money” while Charles Belmont Davis was acclaimed for his role as the dragon in “Dagobert and the Dragon.” Later plays were staged in the auditorium of Drown Hall until the Second World War when the club relocated its performances to the auditorium at the Broughal Junior High School.

On average, the group produced two major productions a year and an additional event centered on student-directed one-act plays. In addition to their own theatre productions, Mustard & Cheese helped stage events for other groups with their expertise in lighting and stage management. They invited theatre groups from other Lehigh Valley institutions to perform at Lehigh or to produce joint productions. The club also hosted an annual banquet with a guest speaker and awards ceremony, along with the annual picnic.

Prior to 1952, the club had a small workshop and stored their props in Drown Hall. When the University decided to renovate Drown Hall, the Mustard & Cheese organization moved its equipment into a temporary Quonset hut in front of the Physics Building after renovations to include a green room and scene workshop, marking the first time the club placed all of its resources under one roof (c. 1953). Unfortunately, this Quonset hut lacked water and sufficient heat and lighting. The organization  remodeled the hut by installing new lighting, additional heating, and running water. The Club’s technical crew built closets and storage shelves to house props and new workshop equipment. Costumes were sewn by a group faculty spouses, including Prof. Davis’s wife. Mustard & Cheese often found themselves withsubstantial modest budget and prided themselves on a work ethic of improvising/improvisation and hard work.

Following the creation of the Division of Speech within Lehigh University’s English Department, the organization found a home in the Lamberton basement. After the expansion of theatre studies in 1972 with the creation of the Division of Speech and Theatre, the university soon awarded its first Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre in 1975 and the club began to convertan old power plant into the Wilbur Drama Building. However, Lehigh University did not possess a separate Department of Theatre until 1988. In 1998, Mustard & Cheese moved its members to the newly built Zoellner Arts Center

While the majority of the club’s members were typical university students, several of the Mustard & Cheese actors and actresses pursued professional acting careers. Merle Letowt went to Broadway and played the second lead in “Gypsy,” continuing on to star in “Sweeney Todd” and “Billy Elliott,” even guest-starring on an episode of “Law & Order.” Paul Guilfoyle, who joined Mustard & Cheese late in Professor Davis’s tenure at Lehigh, is known for his role as “Jim Brass” on “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.” Donald Most, left Lehigh early to enter Hollywood,  to play “Ralph Malph” on the television show “Happy Days.”

Biographical Sketch:
H. Barrett Davis headed Mustard & Cheese as Director and advisor when he arrived at Lehigh University in 1946 as an associate professor and eventually as the Chairman of the Division of Speech and Theatre. One of his regrets as a professor was not being able to establish a formal theater building at Lehigh until 26 years later with the renovation of Grace Hall, long after his arrival at the university.

He had studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Dartmouth, and Emerson College. He  served as a faculty member and theatre director at the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and Southwestern University in Memphis, Tennessee. At each institution he created a pictorial history of their dramatic productions. However, he regretted not finding any artifacts relating to Mustard & Cheese’s history prior to his tenure at Lehigh and dedicated himself to the preservation of the club’s history from then onward. Davis retired from Lehigh in 1972. In honor of his years of service, the “H. Barrett Davis Award” was established to reward excellence in university theatrics.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection contains photos of the productions of the Mustard & Cheese Club stagedfrom 1946 to 1972. There are 449 black and white photos and 239 color photos. In addition to photographs, there are 73 playbills, 24 miscellany, and twelve periodical clippings. The captions generally detail the date of the event, the people in the photo, and if applicable, the name of the production during which the photographer took the photo. None of the photos note the name of the photographer. All of these photos were originally from the personal collection of H. Barrett Davis.

Organization of the Content:
This collection is housed in five boxes, with each item given its own protective sleeve. Each box is divided into folders. The smaller photographs are generally glued onto loose sheets of black paper and the entire sheet is housed in one sleeve, although there are several sets of loose photos that are housed in the same sleeve. The larger photographs are housed in individual sleeves and mostly have a caption typewritten on a small piece of paper, folded and glued onto the bottom edge of the photo. There are also many Lehigh University publications, theater playbills, posters, and other ephemera housed in individual sleeves. The collection was originally housed in a set of albums.
