Abstract:
Lehigh University Professor of Romance Department (Dept. of Modern Languages & Literature), Allen J. Barthold was born in Philadelphia and raised in Bethlehem, Pa. He graduated from Bethlehem High School in 1917 and completed his undergraduate work at Lehigh University in 1921. He received his Ph.D. from Yale in1931 and returned to Lehigh University as Professor of the Romance Department in 1939 where he stayed until his retirement in 1967. The collection includes papers from his undergraduate work at Lehigh as well as his graduate and professional work at Yale and Lehigh. The collection also includes photographs and memorabilia from his life as well as papers regarding his two year leave of absence to the Dominican Republic and his work involving the Richards Harding Davis Collection at Lehigh's Linderman Library.

Biographical Note
Allen Jennings Barthold was born August 6, 1900 in Philadelphia. He attended Bethlehem High School with Mildred Cleveland, whom he later married in 1927. They both graduated from B.H.S. in 1917. Barthold then attended Lehigh University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts on June 14, 1921. While at Lehigh he was also a member of the fraternity, Alpha Chi Rho. He was then an instructor of French and Spanish at Lehigh from 1921-22 and 1923-24. He also did graduate work and was a lecturer at Lycee Blaise Pascal, at Clermont-Ferrand, France from 1922-23. He then did graduate work and instructed at Yale University from 1924-39. He received his Ph.D. in 1931 from Yale and was an assistant Professor from 1936-39. He then returned to Lehigh University as head of the Department of Romance Languages in 1939. He remained a Professor at Lehigh until his retirement in 1961'. From 1951-51 he was granted a two year leave of absence and traveled to the Dominican Republic where he served as Director of the Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano.

Scope and Content Note
The collection contains both personal and profession papers of Allen J. Barthold. These include correspondences, publications, and writings. The collection also includes clippings and memorabilia as well as photographs of his undergraduate years at Lehigh University, his graduate years at Yale and Lehigh University, his years as faculty at Lehigh, and his time abroad in the Dominican Republic.

Note: The book, Bethlehem of Pennsylvania, The First One Hundred Years 1741 to 1841, was also included in the collection donated by Elizabeth O'Brien, but is now located in the circulating collection of Lehigh's Linderman Library.

Commencement Programs and Graduation invitations from Bethlehem High School. Papers pertain to both Allen J. Barthold and Mildred Barthold. Also included is the Bethlehem High School 1917 yearbook, El Secuerdo, two 9" x 13" class photos, five other class photos, some from class reunions, and reunion programs and memorabilia from various Class of 1917 reunions.

Certificates and memorabilia from Mildred Barthold's career as a teacher in the state of New York and Pennsylvania. Also included are agreements regarding salary based on number of years in profession.

Correspondence and memorabilia from undergraduate career at Lehigh University in folder 1. Includes report cards, fraternity certificates, letters from Alpha Chi Rho brother, Frank Magee, Lehigh University Anthropometric Tables, Students' Army Training Corps certificates, and commencement invitations and programs.

Graduate correspondence and memorabilia in folder 2 includes letters from Lehigh regarding position to be instructor from 1921-22 and 1923-24, papers regarding his graduate work and position as instructor at Lycee Blaise Pascal, at Clermont-Ferrand, France, and papers regarding his graduate work at Yale University including Ph.D. information and commencement program.

Photographs of his time at Lehigh are also included.

Correspondence between Allen J. Barthold and varying people. Letters included date from 1929 to 1966 and are related to his professional career. There is a grouping of correspondence to and from a close friend, Frank Monaghan. Also included are letters from Allen Johnson of the American Council of Learned Societies, various letters regarding Barthold's publications, and letters from both Yale and Lehigh University.

Writings of Allen J. Barthold dating from 1940 to 1967 and undated. Some are scholarly articles others are about fraternity life at Lehigh University.

Clippings and memorabilia from his professional career at Lehigh University. Includes newspaper clippings, programs of Faculty Publications from the year 1956-57, Lehigh Fraternity Life booklet with a note by the Faculty Advisor, Allen J. Barthold made in 1949, a faculty information card, and a program titled, Citations for Retiring Faculty Members.
Photographs include Romance Department professors and Allen J. Barthold in department office.

         Series II. b. Dominican Republic

Correspondence between Allen J. Barthold and various people prior to and during his stay in the Dominican Republic. Included are letters from the Department of the State in Washington, D.C. regarding his plan to leave the country for two years, various invitations received during stay abroad, information about courses taught, and balance sheets detailing expenses abroad.

Also included are writings by Allen J. Barthold on Bi-National Cultural Centers as well as a short story.

Newspaper clippings and memorabilia regarding his stay abroad. Included are various programs and pamphlets as well as a few Bulletins of the Dominican Embassy. Also included is a folder detailing Barthold's involvement in the creation of "Bon Voyage Dinners Abroad."
Photographs of his stay abroad are included that show many aspects of his trip including travel, meetings, and various shots of the school.

         Series II. c. Richard Harding Davis Collection

While at Lehigh Allen J. Barthold started an association called the Friends of the Richard Harding Davis Collection. Included are his correspondences detailing his efforts and showing his goal to complete the unfinished collection at Lehigh's library.
