Core Information Literacy Competencies

Based on the Middle States and Association of College and Research Library (ACRL) standards we have developed the following list of competencies that represent a shared teaching responsibility between faculty and librarians. An information literate student can:

1. Define and articulate a research need
2. Access information effectively and efficiently
3. Locate and retrieve relevant information sources
4. Critically evaluate information sources
5. Generate and effectively communicate information and knowledge
6. Employ ethical and legal principles in the use of information
