    FM-1 REF016.159 M529
Buros, Oscar Krisen. Mental Measurements Yearbooks.

The Mental Measurements Yearbooks are the pre-eminent resource for reviews-- including reliability information-- of tests and measures (achievement, behavior assessment, education, intelligence, personality, vocational, neuropsychological, and others). These yearbooks represent an extensive collection of test review information covering English- language tests. They are intended for use by researchers in education, psychology, psychiatry, and industry for locating, selecting, and evaluating tests of all kinds. (There are, however, tests that are NOT included in the MMY.)

Each MMY test entry includes: the test title, the purpose of the test, population (the groups for which the test is intended), the publication date of the test, types of scores produced by the test, administration (is it given to individuals or groups?), forms/parts/levels (the different parts of the test materials), price data (including manual information), special distribution restrictions, any special additions, time (how long the test takes to adminster), the author(s) of the test and the publisher, cross-references to previous edition entries, references to articles/books using/reporting on the test, and one or more reviews.

The entries are arranged by number. Earlier volumes have the tests classified by broad subject, so you will have to look up the title in the index; recent volumes are alphabetical by test title and have a broad classified subject index. Each MMY volume has indexes listing the tests by author/reviewer names, scores, and publishers.

Each MMY does NOT supersede the previous volumes; each edition supplements information from earlier editions and later volumes cross reference to earlier edition entries. Therefore, it is necessary to consult all editions for complete coverage. The MMY indexes are NOT cumulative (they don't list the tests reviewed in other volumes) so you can either

    SAMPLE MMY ENTRY (older volumes)

    • Older volumes are arranged by 'classified subject area'
    • Indexes will give the entry number of the test.
    • Star or asterisk before entry: star refers to a new entry, asterisk to one which has been revised or supplemented since the last MMY.
    • Asterisk after entry: prepared from firsthand examination of item.
    • References include cross-references to other MMY editions.
    • Reviews will follow main entry and may have their own references.

Murphy, Linda L, Impara,  James C., and Plake, Barbara S. Tests in print V; an index to tests, test reviews, and the literature on specific tests. Buros. 1999. 2 vols.

    Sample TIP entry

This volume is a descriptive listing of and cumulative index to MMY entries for tests that are commercially available. A listing of recently out of print items is also included. Test entries are arranged in alphabetical order, though each entry is also numbered. At the back of vol. 2 are indexes by test title, acronym, subject area (same classification divisions as in the MMY: achievement, behavior assessment, developmental, educational, aptitude, neurophyschological, personalty, vocational, etc.), name (of author, reviewer, etc.), and score; as well as a publishers directory  (including web address and email for some publishers).

The entry for each test indicates, under 'cross-references', which MMY presents the most recent listing for it. TIP also includes information similar to the MMY: purpose, population, date, scores, administration, price data (dated), time, comments, author, publisher, and references to the test in the literature, if there are any.

    ETS Test Collection

The ETS Test Collection, available on the web at http://www.ets.org/testcoll/index.html, is a database of descriptions and availability information for about 20,000 tests and research instruments. It does not include reviews or reliability and validity information.

Searching is by keywords in the test entry, specifically title, author, etc. To search, click on Database Search. Then click on the Public Access button on the next screen if necessary.

    ETS search screen

The search results will bring up a list of entries for tests that match that keyword. Clicking on the title of a test will bring up the full entry on that test. Entries include  the title, author, description of the test and its uses, any subtests, administration time, age and grade level, publication date, contact information for obtaining the test, and subject headings (which can be used to find more tests of the same type).

The Testlink (ETS Test Collection Database) search will produce results that may  include some Tests on Demand, downloadable tests from ETS for $25 a test. We have only the Y set of the _Tests in Microfiche _sets but any of those tests are available to our students. in the  MICROFORM FM-2-MFORM section. And other TIM's can be ordered from the ETS Library. Most of the tests in the collection, however, are not available for purchase from ETS. The student must seek out a copy from the publisher or author or find a copy included in an article or report.<>
