INTRODUCTION

This guide identifies the types and locations of geologic,  topographic, and other miscellaneous maps held at Lehigh University's Fairchild-Martindale Library. It also provides information about guides to identifying maps, as well as links to webpages for maps and information about maps. Note that some historic map material is held at Special Collections.

The current collection policy of Government Documents with respect to maps is to select all PA, NJ, NY and MD 7 1/2 minute maps as they become available. Other maps are added on a selective basis over time.

After checking the guide below, if there is a particular map issued recently for which you want to check availability, please contact Steve Firtko (contact information below). If you are a member of the Lehigh University community and want to order a particular map for the collection to be used for curricular or research purposes, please contact one of the persons below.

Note that the BLM maps are updated sporadically. Contact Steve Firtko for details.

If you need help locating any of the materials, please contact:

Steve Firtko, Govt. Documents Coordinator (610-758-5337)
Brian Simboli, Science Librarian (610-758-5003), or
Roseann Bowerman, Social Sciences and Government Documents Librarian (610-758-3053)

Please email comments about the guide to Brian Simboli.

II. MAP LOCATIONS, WITH HOLDINGS  Back to Table of Contents

Geologic and topographic maps received by the Library at Lehigh University are housed in Fairchild-Martindale Library, in two locations. What follows are links to descriptions of what you will find in each of these two locations. If you already know the type of map you are looking for, consult the "Index to maps" to find which of the two locations houses it.

FM-1-ANNEX: Holdings at Fairchild Annex Room, 1st floor (South side of Fairchild-Martindale)

This location houses maps in the United States Geological Survey Map Series. Descriptions of these series follow. Note that each series has an associated code (e.g., A for "Antarctic"). On the shelves in the Annex, you will find maps for the series arranged by those codes. The codes appear in the upper left hand corner of envelopes containing the maps.  The envelopes are arranged alphabetically by code and numerically within a code. Coverage not necessary complete; coverage may be augmented over time.

A – Antarctic geologic maps Reconnaissance USGS geologic maps, scale 1:250,000.

C – Coal Investigations

Geologic maps on topographic or planimetric bases; various scales; show bedrock geology, stratigraphy, and structural relations in certain coal-resource areas.

CP – Circum-Pacific Investigations USGS 1:10,000,000. Maps depicting: energy resources, tectonic and geodynamic data, mineral resources, natural hazards, permafrost and ground-ice conditions.

GP – Geophysical Investigations

Maps on topographic or planimetric bases; show results of surveys using geophysical techniques, such as gravity, magnetic, seismic, or radioactivity, which reflect subsurface structures that are of economic or geologic significance. Many maps are correlated with the surface geology.

GQ – Geologic Quadrangle Maps

Multicolor geologic maps on topographic bases in 7.5- or 15- minute quadrangle units; scales mainly in 1:24,000 or 1:62,500 scale; show bedrock, surfical, or engineering geology. Maps are accompanied by brief texts and some maps are structure and columnar sections as well.

HA – Hydrologic Investigations Atlases

Multicolor or black and white maps on topographic or planimetric bases presenting a wide range of geohydrologic data; both regular and irregular areas; principal scale 1:24,000, regional studies at 1:250,000 scale or smaller.

I – Miscellaneous Geologic Investigations

Maps on planimetric or topographic bases; regular and irregular areas; various scales; a wide variety of format and subject matter. The series also includes 7.5-minute quadrangle photo-geological maps, which show geology as interrupted from aerial photographs. Series also includes maps of Mars and the Moon.

MF – Miscellaneous Field Studies Maps

Maps on topographic or planimetric bases; quadrangle or irregular areas; various scales; show preliminary results on various subjects such as environmental studies or wilderness mineral investigations.

MR – Mineral Investigations Resource Maps

Mineral distribution and classification maps; scales from 1:250,000 to 1:5,000,000; show geographic distribution and grade of mineral resource commodities. Brief accompanying text may include a general description of the geologic occurrences, a locality index, and a bibliography.

OC – Oil and Gas Investigations Charts

Charts show stratagraphic information on certain oil and gas fields and other areas having hydrocarbon potential.

OM- Oil and Gas Investigations Maps

Maps, on planimetric or topographic bases, of oil and gas fields or other areas having hydrocarbon potential; various scales; show geology; and sub-surface geologic structures.

TQ – Topographic Quadrangle Maps

Conventional line topographic maps in 7.5- and 15-min. quadrangle units; scales 1:24,000 and 1:62,500; show the horizontal position of selected features, and the shape and elevation of the terrain by contours. Also includes orthophotoquads and orthophotomaps (multicolor photographic image maps in standard 7.5 minute quadrangle format with added selected topographic detail).

FM-2-SOUTH: Holdings at Government Documents Section, 2nd floor (South side of Fairchild-Martindale)

Below is a map of the locations of cabinets containing maps. The cabinets are numbered. To see what a given cabinet contains, scroll down to see the description of its contents. For example, to see the contents of cabinet 1 that appears the map, scroll down to the section labeled "Cabinet 1" below the map. The drawers in the cabinet are numbered, starting from the top drawer and moving down.

Some of the map holdings have links to spreadsheets containing a list of specific maps in F-M Library. Wherever in the spreadsheets a map is listed without date and/or type, we do not hold that map.

NOTE: Map represents only one portion of 2nd floor south, the west side, but depicts locations of map holdings on that floor.

From the webpage: "The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States. The Federally recognized name of each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by State, county, and geographic coordinates. The GNIS is our Nation's official repository of domestic geographic names information. Information about foreign geographic feature names can be obtained from the GEOnet Names Server, developed and maintained by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency."
