ECONLIT

goes back to 1969 in this online database.
PAIS
(Public Affairs Information Service)
This database contains materials published since 1972. It includes
articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book
chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs. Covers most
of the major International Relations journals.
PROQUEST
Research Library
This index provides access to citations and in many cases full text of
articles from over 1800 journals on a wide range of topics. Also a
source for news from major U.S. newspapers. Dates of coverage vary by
periodical, many go back to 1986 or earlier.
WorldCat
Database
Not an index to articles in journals. This specialized tool is
essentially a catalog of the books, manuscripts, documents , journal
holdings and other materials in libraries in the U.S. and
internationally.
FACTIVA
DATABASE
While this database generally has a business focus, it is a very useful
source of foreign newspaper coverage of a variety of topics. You
must use Internet Explorer browser for best results.
LEXIS/NEXIS
ACADEMIC
Hundreds of international and foreign news sources are available in
full text from this proprietary database. Includes the New York Times
and the Washington Post as well as major newspapers from countries
around the world. Note that the coverage of the Los Angeles Times in Lexis
only extends back 6 months. At this time there is no other alternative
subscription.
MEMRI, Middle East Media Research
Institute
The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) "explores the Middle
East through the region's media. MEMRI bridges the language gap which
exists between the West and the Middle East, providing timely
translations of Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew media, as well as original
analysis of political, ideological, intellectual, social, cultural, and

World News Connection (WNC) is an online news service, only accessible
via the World Wide Web.
It provides translations of non-US media sources by
Foreign Broadcast Information Service analysts. The WNC is useful for
monitoring coverage of political, social and economic events in the
foreign national and local press.
It offers an extensive array of translated and English-language news
and information. Particularly effective in its coverage of
local media sources, WNC provides the power to identify what
really is happening in a specific country or region. This
database is a rolling file and covers only the current approximately
6 years. LU has a one-user account. If someone else is searching
you cannot get into the files. IMPORTANT: USE THE EXIT BUTTON TO
LEAVE THE SYSTEM OR IT WILL NOT ADMIT THE NEXT USER UNTIL IT
TIMES OUT.
Carnegie Endowment for International
Peace
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, founded in 1910, is a
private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization"dedicated to advancing
cooperation between nations and promoting active international
engagement by the United States. " It publishes a wide range of books,
reports, policy briefs, and working papers on a range of international
affairs issues. Many of these resources appear on its website.
Congressional Budget Office
An agency of the U.S. Congress, CBO aims to "provide the Congress with
the objective, timely, nonpartisan analyses needed for economic and
budget decisions and with the information and estimates required for
the Congressional budget process."
Congressional Research Service
The Congressional Research Service is " the public policy research arm
of the United States Congress. As a legislative branch agency within
the Library of Congress, CRS works exclusively and directly for Members
of Congress, their Committees and staff on a confidential, nonpartisan
basis." The CRS prepares studies and reports analysing a broad spectrum
of issues of interest to the work of the Congress. These reports are not
widely distributed which is a issue of concern to information
advocates.Rrecently the websites which provided significant access to

Federation of American Scientists
The Federation of American Scientists is a " nonprofit, tax-exempt
organization founded in 1945 as the Federation of Atomic Scientists. Its
founders were members of the Manhattan Project, creators of the atom
bomb and deeply concerned about the implications of its use for the
future of humankind. Known in its early years as the "scientists
lobby," FAS combines the scholarly resources of its member scientists
and informed citizens with knowledge of practical politics. Endorsed by
the nearly 60 Nobel Laureates in biology, chemistry, economics,
medicine, and physics as sponsors, FAS is uniquely qualified to bring
the scientific perspective to public policy. FAS' strategies include
advocacy, briefings with policy makers and the press, public education
and outreach, collaboration with civil rights, human rights, and arms
control groups, and grassroots organizing." The FAS homepage provides
information on its various projects such as Arms Sales Monitoring,
Biological Weapons, CyberStrategy, Intelligence Reform.
Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch is an independent, nongovernmental organization,
supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations
worldwide. It accepts no government funds, directly or indirectly. Its
mission is "to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, to
protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and to bring offenders
to justice." Many of its publications and reports are downloadable from
the website.
INCORE:
INCORE, (International Conflict Research) was set up in 1993 by the
University of Ulster and the United Nations University to undertake
research and policy work that is useful to the resolution of ethnic,
political and religious conflicts.
International Atomic Energy Agency
The IAEA is " the world's center of cooperation in the nuclear field.
It was set up as the world's "Atoms for Peace" organization in 1957
within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member
States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and
peaceful nuclear technologies." Website provides reports on nuclear
power capabilities of the countries of the world.

Crisis Group (ICG)
"An independent, non-profit, multinational organisation, with 90
staff members on five continents, working through field-based
analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly
conflict."
Institute for Defense Analyses
The Institute for Defense Analyses is a "federally funded research and
development center established to assist the Office of the Secretary of
Defense, the Joint Staff, the Unified Commands, and Defense Agencies in
addressing important national security issues, particularly those
requiring scientific and technical expertise. IDA also conducts related
research for other government agencies on national problems for which
the Institute’s skills and experience are especially suited."
Iraq Watch
Iraq Watch is a "comprehensive web site devoted to tracking mass
destruction weapons in Iraq. In the wake of Saddam Hussein's ouster,
the site is committed to monitoring efforts to account for these
weapons. Iraq Watch details key Iraqi organizations and sites involved
in weapons proliferation, lists their foreign suppliers, and provides
access to U.N. and other documents that describe past and present
activities in Iraq." It is a private, non-profit, non-partisan
foundation that operates in Washington, D.C. under the auspices of the
University of Wisconsin.
Rand Corporation
The RAND Corporation is a nonprofit institution that provides research
and analysis on defense and security but also increasingly on a variety
of other topics such as health and education. A good deal of their
funding comes from U.S. government, particularly the Department of
Defense.

Institute of Peace
Reports from this U.S. funded institute are concerned with various
aspects of international conflict and its resolution.
VINC Project
The work of R. William Ayres, the VINC project is " a research program
studying the processes, outcomes, and resolutions of Violent, Intrastate Nationalist Conflicts."

The UN Human Development office publishes global, regional and national
human development reports. This webpage provides access to these reports
from the most recent back to the mid 1990's. Human Development
Report’s primary purpose is to assess the state of human development
across the globe and provide a critical analysis of a specific theme
each year. It combines thematic policy analysis with detailed country
data that focus on human well-being, not just economic trends.
Selecting the "Statistics" link will get you to the Human Development

Excel - A Microsoft spreadsheet package widely available on campus and through the CD's distributed by LTS.
SPSS and SAS are more complex statistical analysis packages. They are available at Lehigh Computing Public Sites. Must be downloaded to public site machines using the Install Software package. Douglas Reese is the Library and Technology Services computing consultant who supports this package. He can help you get started with the application and help you do basic tasks.
