What Genealogical Resources Does Lehigh have?
Lehigh has almost no material on genealogy; that's not one of the
subject areas we cover.
Most inquirers will do better if they take
their research to the Easton Public Library (which has a distinguished
genealogy collection), or to the Bethlehem Public
Library (which has an excellent local history collection).

Other local resources for genealogy would be:
-
Lehigh County Historical Society, Old Court House at 5th and Hamilton
Sts., PO Box 1548 Allentown, (610) 435-1074 http://www.voicenet.com/~lchs/
-
Northampton County Historical & Genealogical Society, 101 South Fourth
Street, Easton, 610-253-1222 http://www.northamptonctymuseum.org/
-
Lehigh County Courthouse, 455 West Hamilton Street, Allentown.
-
Northampton County Courthouse, 669 Washington St, Easton
-
GenWeb has a site on researching in Lehigh County: http://www.pa-roots.com/~lehigh/lcgw/
and their main page, http://www.pa-roots.com/
and the ProGenealogists site: http://progenealogists.com/genealogysleuthb.htm
also haveaccess to good information.
-
The Pennsyvania Historical and Museum Commission has some information about genealogical services on their web page. Go to http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/ and click on Genealogy.
- Also try the Historical Society of Pennsylvania http://www.hsp.org/index.html
A few possible leads for looking up information on someone who attended
Lehigh or who was on the Lehigh Staff:
-
Check ASA, our online catalog, http://asa.lib.lehigh.edu/uhtbin/webcat
for that person's name as a subject. For certain people, the Special
Collections office in the Bayer Galleria of Rare Books (Linderman, 3rd
Floor. Hours 1-5 PM Monday through Friday) maintains a Vertical File of
clippings and pamphlets. Also, any books or other materials we might have
on them will also be listed in ASA. (Most of these materials will have
the location code L-BAYER, which means that they are in the Bayer Galleria.)
-
You can also check ASA for the person's name as Author, to see if we have
any writings by them.
-
Old issues of the Lehigh Yearbook, Epitome: A Yearbook are
kept on FM-3-North (Fairchild-Martindale, 3rd floor, North side) at 378.73
L52e. There are also copies in the Bayer Galleria.
-
Old issues of the University Catalog, which gives staff and faculty names,
are also available in the Bayer Galleria.
-
Also check the indexes of the two histories of Lehigh University:
-
A history of Lehigh University. Catherine Drinker Bowen.
FM-1-REF 378.73 L52b
-
Lehigh University : a history of education... W. Ross Yates.
FM-3-NORTH 378.748 Y34L
-
More Lehigh University historical materials are available in the Bayer
Galleria.
-
The Alumni Association sometimes has files on distinguished alumni. The
best way to contact the Alumni staff is via telephone at 758-3135.
-
People trying to contact alumni should go through the Alumni Association
also: the Alumni Association will take the person's contact information
and forward it to the alumnus. You can refer visitors to the Lehigh Alumni
directory: FM-1-REF (and L-1-REF) 378.748 L522a 1998. We do not give
out alumni contacts over the phone- such questions should go through
the Alumni Association office and/or web page
We do have newspapers on microfilm for the Lehigh Valley:
-
Brown & White (Lehigh Student newspaper): holdings from 1894
onward.
-
Bethlehem Express-Times, Globe-Times, Globe, etc. : holdings
going back to 1867
-
Morning Call 1987 to present only
but they do not have indexing. For indexing to recent issues of the
Morning Call, try http://www.mcall.com/, or Lexis/Nexis; we also have
electronic issues of the Morning Call as a separate database; for
indexing of
the Bethlehem Express-Times and its predecessors, try the Bethlehem
Public
Library local history indexes.: http://www.bapl.org/lochist.html
We also have a selection of US Census 'enumerator' records that are
of interest to genealogist (because they are the actual Census forms, rather
than aggregate data) of the decennial Censuses from 1920 and before, going
back to 1790, though coverage varies. These are on Microfilm on FM-2-South,
listed under United States. Bureau of the Census. However, people who want
to use these will probably still do much better if they consult with the
public library or historical society first. We have more information about
the Census http://www.lehigh.edu/library/govdocs/census.html
and the Enumerator reports/Census
Schedules http://www.lehigh.edu/library/govdocs/census_schedule.html.
We also have some general government documents, handbooks and reference
works on genealogy. Look up 'genealogy' in ASA as a subject for a complete
list.
