Finding Dissertations and Theses

Finding dissertations on a subject can be a somewhat confusing process because of how they are indexed. Some major abstract services include dissertations but others do not; most do not index masters theses. ProQuest Dissertations and Theses is the index to those filmed/scanned by ProQuest, which includes most US schools and some of the major international universities. Some universities have begun mounting their own disseratons and theses on the Web. Lehigh dissertations are listed in ASA, the online catalog; recent ones are linked to the PDF versions. Dissertations from other schools may be obtained either by purchase or through InterLibrary Loan. Many organizations and universities also maintain lists of dissertations in progress.

To find a Lehigh dissertation or thesis:

You can find Lehigh dissertations through ASA, searching by author, title, or subject. You can also browse by academic department.

To browse by academic department, select 'Browse' and type in academic dissertations -- department name, then click Subjects:

Print copies of all Lehigh doctoral dissertations are housed in Special Collections. When available, the ASA record links directly to the digital (PDF) version. Note: circulating copies of College of Education dissertations and some departments are also available in Fairchild/Martindale Library.

Lehigh master's theses since 1960 are available on microfilm in Fairchild/Martindale Library. Earlier master's theses are in paper only and are housed in Special Collections. Many (but not all) theses (including some bachelor's theses), are cataloged in ASA. Note that theses that have no microfilm Reel Number listed are not yet available.

Special Collections is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Appointments may be made for other times. Users may request that dissertations be held at the Circulation Desk for use outside normal Special Collections hours. (Master's and bachelor's theses cannot be held there). Please check the catalog record to determine what level of thesis/dissertation you are dealing with. Doctoral dissertation call numbers begin with "DISS". Bachelor's and master's theses begin with "THESIS".

PDF copies of other universities' humanities, social sciences, and selected cross-disciplinary topics are also free; date coverage officially starts with 1997, but many from earlier years are also present.
