How do I do a Citation Search on the Science Citation Index or the Social Science Citation Index?

To do a citation count search you will need:

A bibliography of the articles to be searched.[1]  Then,

  1. Select the years you wish to search from either the Science Citation Index (1991 to present) or the Social Sciences Citation Index (1998 to present).
  2. Change the search default from title word to cited reference.

  1. Cited reference format must be first author’s last name and two initials connected by a hyphen, such as DuPaul-GJ or Kramer-P*
  2. In order see all the citations under a particular first author’s name, use the dictionary, shown here:

Notice how the same work can be cited in various ways[2]

Capture multiple cited references by highlighting your choices and using the Control key

Or, if you wish to see how many times a particular article is cited, select only that citation.   Add the cited references to the query; run the search.

Click the results to view the citations citing your article(s).

To print out the citing references and the cited reference. choose  “Print cited reference hits only” from the print menu.

View references citing the work(s) you are interested in.

Notice self-citations, if any.

If you wish to print out or save the results to disk, follow the typical file capture steps.  These stations are not on the LAN so you must use a floppy disk.

[1] This is necessary as the citation indexes on CD-ROM search on first author names only.

[2] The citation indexes may contain misleading data because there is no “name authority” nor is there any attempt to standardize the references (footnotes) before inclusion in the database.
