Table of Contents


Books
There are two resources that will assist in locating items in the Lehigh University libraries and in other libraries.  They are:
    1. ASA, The Library’s Online Catalog.  This lists all the items in the library and their location.  This resource is available via the WWW.
    2. WorldCat.  This is a catalog that lists over 44 million items including books, journals, audio-visual, CD-ROMs and software.  These resources may be obtained via Lehigh’s Interlibrary Loan.
Remember: Use ASA to locate books, journals, A-V materials, and CD-ROMs.  Journal articles are NOT indexed in ASA.

Industry Information
These resources can be used to locate information on industries.  They are:
    1. Associations Unlimited.  Good for finding the industry's association and other related associations.  Its URL is http://www.galenet.com/servlet/AU?&u=n&u=i&u=r&u=f&u=s.
    2. Investext. It has analyst reports covering more than 11,000 U.S. and international companies and 53 industries.  These reports come from Wall Street and international brokerage firms. This is available by following the directions for the Journal Index section.
    3. Journal indexes list articles on industries.  See the Journal Index section for a listing of indexes
    4. Lexis Nexis Academic.  See the Journal Index section for a description.
    5. North American industry classification system, United States.  317.3/U588sa/ FM-1-R-Ref.  This is available in print or on the WWW.  Its URLs are http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naicstab.htm or http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html.
    6. Standard Industrial Classification Manual.  317.3/U5852/1987/Ref.  This resource is available in print and on the WWW.  The URL's for the manual is http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html.
    7. Standard and Poor’s Industry Surveys.  338/S781I/FM-1-Ref (On Reserve).  Analyzes specific industries on quarterly basis.  Trends, financial information, and industry data are available.  Earlier volumes are available in the stacks back to 1976.
    8. Standard and Poor's Market Insight. This resource has a variety of information an industry, a stock, country, and company. It has the Industry Surveys.
    9. Value Line.  332.6/V215/FM-1-Ref (On Reserve).  Includes quantitative and qualitative information for industry and company.  It rates the companies’ stock as a buy, sell or hold.  Back issues are available on fiche from 1980 at Fairchild Library.

     


Statistical Indexes
These items list sources where statistics can be located.  They are:

    1. Index to International Statistics.  310.016/I38/FM-1-Ref. The Index covers those issued by the international bodies, i.e., United Nations.  The statistics are available on fiche at the Fairchild Library.
    2. Lexis Nexis Statistical.  This is an index of statistics that were previously published in the print indexes that are listed above.  Also this is compilation of statistics from a variety of sources some of which are available in print and/or on the fiche at Fairchild Library.  NOTE: Web version does not have all of the statistics that are available in print.  Its URL is http://www.lexis-nexis.com/statuniv.

 


General Statistical Resources
The listed resources will give statistics on industries, general economy and population.  These are:

    1. Business statistics of the United States.  338.09/B976a/FM-1-Ref.  Biennial publication with the cumulating of statistical data for the series appearing the Survey of Current Business from 1947 to year prior to publication.
    2. Lexis Nexis Academic.  This database has a section entitled Business News with subsections entitled Industry & Market News and Company Financial Information.  This is available on the Databases page.
    3. Statistical Abstract of the United States.  317.2/U58s/FM-1-RRef.  Latest edition is in Ready Reference with earlier editions in the stacks. The URL for the Web edition is http://www.census.gov/statab/www/.
    4. STAT-USA.  This is a compendium of government statistical information on the Web.  It gives information on general economic conditions in the United States, i.e., Consumer Price Index and Leading Economic Indicators.  This compendium contains on the Globus and National Trade Data Bank.  This gives information on foreign trade statistics of the U.S., trade opportunities and information on a foreign country’s rules and regulations. This is available on the Databases page. (See Journal Index section on how to access this item.)
    5. Survey of current business. C56.109: /FM-2-DOC.  The URLs for the Web versions are: http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/pubs.htm or http://asa.lib.lehigh.edu/cgi-bin/pubid?Pub=28352.

 


Company and Stock Information

    1. Factiva. This is replacing Dow Jones Interactive.  It has similar information and plus additional quantitative and qualitative material.
    2. Investext.  This has the analyst reports for companies. (See Industry Information section for more details).
    3. Lexis Nexis Academic.  See the Journal Index section for a description.
    4. Research Insight/Compustat.  This is a database contains information on companies back 20 years.  There are about 60 predefined reports and the ability to create your own reports on a company. The directions to access the program are click on the Start button, then Programs, and then Lan Research Insight 7.9, Research Insight.  Program will load and it is ready for your use.  If not on the Programs menu, then look for the "Install Software" button.  Directions are: click on the Install Software button, then the window with the list of software comes up, scroll down to the Research Insight 7.9 box, click on it.  At this junction, you will see the Research Insight 7.9 software page.  At the bottom, click on the Install button and the software will load.  After it loads, go to the access directions to use the program
    5. SEC Edgar Database. See World Wide Web for description.  Its URL is http://www.sec.gov/edgarhp.htm.
    6. Standard and Poor’s Market Insight. This is a compendium of financial information on companies and industries. It includes brief information profiles on countries and investment trends. Its Industry Surveys is part of the service.
    7. Value Line. See Industry Information section for description.

 


Journal Indexes and Other Resources
Locating articles with quantitative and qualitative information on companies and industries may be found using these indexes.  Some indexes have full text articles.  To access the Web version, click on Lehigh Homepage, at the top middle of the page Libraries, then Electronic Resources and then Databases.  Its URL is http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/.  They are:
    1. ABI-Inform.  Indexes over 1400 journals in management and business.  Coverage is from 1987 for many journals.  About 45% of the articles are available in full text.
    2. ABI-Inform Dateline. Indexes resources with local and regional business news coverage of companies, business and the economy.
    3. ABI-Inform Trade & Industry. Indexes resources with a trade or industry focus.
    4. Accounting and Tax Index.  Available only in print and is shelved alphabetically in Index Section, Reference, Fairchild Library.  Formerly called the Accountant's Index, Supplement.
    5. Econlit.  A good index for the research journals that cover company information from a business perspective.
    6. Engineering Index (a.k.a. Compendex). The index provides access to journal articles, trade journals and conference proceedings. Its B2B coverage is good.
    7. Factiva.  Its Publications Library covers over 8000 publications (full text) back to early 1980's
    8. InfoTrac (a.k.a. Expanded Academic Index).  Covers over 1400 journal going back to 1980.  Some articles are available in full text.
    9. Lexis Nexis Academic.  Provides full text of journals, newspapers, and wire services relating to business information.  It also has full text legal materials such court decisions, legislation and regulations.  The service is available via the Web.
    10. Metadex. This has a subfile called the Materials Business File. This indexes the business apects of the materials area.
    11. PsychInfo.  A good source for journal articles on consumer and marketing behavior.
    12. Research Library.  Covers over 1800 journals and newspapers.  Some journal articles are available in full text.

These resources will assist your research on a variety of topics. They are:

    1. Inspec. This has a number of articles in physics, electrical/electronics, computer science/engineering, and information technology that cover business related items.
    2. Philsopher's Index. This covers various aspects of the
    3. WestLaw Campus. This includes statutes, regulations and court decisions of the Federal and state governments.

     


Electronic Journals
Another source of full text journal articles is the electronic journal (a.k.a. e-journal).  We have access to many e-journal collections through a variety of sources.  To access them, click on this URL: http://www.lehigh.edu/library/ejournals/.  The following sources have economic, finance and management journals that will help with your research.  They are:

    1. Emerald Library.  This resource is heavily weighted in the management area.  It is a good source for supply chain management information.  (NOTE: Search Engine for Emerald Library is not a good one.)
    2. JSTOR.  This is a good source for locating items concerning logistics and management of the items over a period of time.  (NOTE: this has a four to five year delay in mounting the articles.)
    3. Wiley Interscience.  This has a number of economic and management journals that can be useful in locating material on your topic.

 


World Wide Web
Using a search engine, i.e., AltaVista, Infoseek, etc., you will find information that may be useful.  There are (but not limited to) government, associations, companies and individuals that have home pages.  They provide facts, figures, and reports that may be important to your research.  When searching on the Web, be sure to use a number of search engines.  There are multi-search engines that search other search engines.  These will make searching the Web more efficient.  Dogpile.com is an example of these multi-search engines.  Its URL is http://www.dogpile.com.  It will search a variety of search engines to locate needed resources.  An example would be a search for company home pages listing information on the company and/or product.  Remember: anyone can put up a web page with information. Is the information on the web page reliable?

Statistical Resources on the Web are:

    1. Company Web Pages.  These are good sources of financial information but REMEMBER the companies that issue this information maintain these pages.
    2. SEC Edgar Database.  This is available via Factiva, Standard & Poor's Market Insight and many company web pages.  Its URL is http://www.sec.gov/edgarhp.htm.

These are additional sites for statistics on the economy.  They are:

    1. Bureau of Economic Analysis.  Its URL is http://www.bea.doc.gov/.
    2. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Its URL is http://www.bls.gov/.
    3. Federal Statistics site.  Its URL is http://www.fedstats.gov/.
    4. Securities and Exchange Commission.  Its URL is http://www.sec.gov/.
    5. U.S. Census Bureau.  Its URL is http://www.census.gov/

There are additional resources including web sites that can assist you in locating information on an industry, legal information, marketing, etc.  They are:

    1. Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA).  URL is http://www.aia-aerospace.org/.
    2. American Bankers Association (ABA).  URL is http://www.aba.com.
    3. American Marketing Association.  URL is http://www.ama.org/.
    4. American Insurance Association.  URL is http://www.aiadc.org.
    5. American Petroleum Institute.  URL is http://www.api.org.
    6. Association of Online Professionals (AOP).  URL is http://www.usiia.org (E-commerce)
    7. Chain Drug Marketing Association (CDMA).  URL is http://www.chaindrug.com.
    8. Grocery Manufacturers of America.  URL is http://www.gmabrands.com.
    9. Industrial Strength Woodworking Portal.  This site has information on the woodworking and furniture.  Its URL is http://www.iswonline.com/index.shtml.
    10. NACHA: The Electronic Payments Association.  URL is http://www.nacha.org. (E-commerce)
    11. National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS).  URL is http://www.nacds.org.
    12. National Confectioners Association of the U.S. (NCA).  Its URL is http://www.candyusa.org.
    13. National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC).  URL is http://www.npcnow.org.
    14. Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA).  URL is http://www.pcmanet.org.
    15. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PMA).  URL is http://www.phrma.org.
    16. RigMatch Information Services, Inc. allows searching for over 1000 energy web sites.  Its URL is http://www.rigmatch.com/websearch.html.
    17. Retail Confectioners International (RCI).  URL is http://www.retailconfectioners.org.
    18. Yahoo.http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Finance_and_Investment/ provides quotes for stocks and other financial information.

     


Off Campus Library Services/Proxy
To obtain information on library services for off campus students, go to the Off-Campus Library Services.  Its URL is http://www.lehigh.edu/library/guides/distance_ed.html.  Proxy is handled by using the Off campus button () on the Databases page. When you click on the button, a ID/PW box appears. Type in your AFS ID/PW, click ok, and then you can search the selected database.


Technology Fee Information
Lehigh has initiated a technology fee program that has a number of options.  The documents that are listed below provide information concerning the technology fee and those who are eligible.  Please review and contact the Help Desk if you have questions at 610-758-4357.  The documents are:

    1. Student Technology Fee Frequently Asked Questions.  Its URL is http://www.Lehigh.EDU/newtech/.
    2. Lehigh University Student Fastnet Dialin Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).  This page describes the arrangements between Lehigh and Fastnet for STUDENTS who have paid the technology fee and live off-campus. Only those part-time students who have paid the technology fee are eligible.  Its URL is http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/fastnet2.html.
    3. Lehigh University Faculty/Staff Fastnet Deal Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).  Lehigh University faculty and staff and retired faculty and staff.  What about students?  Students are eligible to participate if they wish, but this program is not primarily intended for students.  Its URL is http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/fastnet.html.
