ACCOUNTING 152 Managerial Accounting

This webpage identifies databases that can help you find articles relating to managerial accounting.

If you need further help, contact Brian Simboli, x5003 after doing some preliminary searching on your topic in advance of setting up a meeting.

Below, you might want to start out with the section about ABI Inform databases and then explore the "Other Databases".

ABI Inform Databases

Below describes some details about using the ABI Inform databases.

First, enter ABI Inform Global. Click "on campus" or "off campus". When you get to the search interface, at the upper left you will see a link to "Databases selected: ABI/INFORM Global". Click on this link. In the resulting page, check ABI/INFORM Dateline and ABI/INFORM Trade and & Industry. Click the continue button. You will now be able to search three databases.  (While searching, spot check to make sure all three databases are listed being searched.)

Some search strategies are these.

1.

Go to the link for "Browse Topics". E.g., put in standard cost systems.  A list of subject headers comes up; under the header for management accounting, click on "Narrow by related topic". You can narrow to information systems.  (You may not want to do too much narrowing at the outset, since the resulting search set may then be too small.)

Select the subject header you want.  Using "Add to Search". Note that the subject term(s) that you’ve selected appear in the search engine box. Run your search and review the results.

Try different approaches; e.g., instead of standard cost systems, put in standard cost accounting.

Select the full text link to see the article. If there is not one, select the find a copy link. Look for the "SFX" button . Click on this to come to a menu where you can either find the article or you can order the article through interlibrary loan ("ILLiad", requiring a one-time registration; you may want to specify that you want email delivery of articles).

2.

Using basic search or advanced search (see the tabs), do a keyword search on your topic. This may be worth trying if the strategy above does not work.

First, read this tutorial about constructing search statements. (Try a different browser if this does not come up.) You might want to experiment with different ways of putting in your search if the subject searching described in 1 above seems too restrictive.

Do a search on your subject. You will often find that the first search results in far too many hits. You can narrow the search by adding new terms using the date range feature (scroll down to see it).

See directions above for obtaining/accessing the full text.

3.

Another option is to start with an accounting journal recommended by your professor.  Examples are: Strategic Finance or the Journal of Accountancy.  Put in the name of the journal after clicking on the publications tab. Click the name of the jouranl. This will bring up a list of the issues for that publication. Toward the top there is a box where you can put in search terms to search within that publication.

Other Databases

To find other relevant library databases, go to the library homepage.  On the drag down menu at the upper left of this webpage, you will see a menu that helps you identify the databases that are relevant to your topic. Select "Business and Economics". Scan over the databases that come up. Information buttons describe each database. For example, try the database Factiva. Also try Lexis/Nexis Academic. To search latter, click the business link on the left, then click on accounting. Drag down to select the publication you want to search. Descriptions of the publications are toward the bottom of the search page.
