Searching the Lehigh University Online Catalog

The Lehigh Catalog, ASA, contains records of  the library's collection of books, journals, documents, microfilm collections, government publications, electronic materials and selected web resources. Both primary and secondary sources can be located using the search features of ASA.

A method for searching for a significant number of the primary source collections about the 17th century American colonial period would be to conduct a Keyword/ Subject heading search looking for the following terms:
    (Colony)  History   Sources   or
    Archives  (Colony)

eg: Pennsylvania  History Sources    or   Virginia   History   Sources
eg: Archives Pennsylvania                or    Archives  Virginia

A search of this nature should retrieve the colonial or provincial  records in our collection as well as a number of other primary resources. If you carefully observe the subject headings assigned to some of the more relevant works  you can hyper-link within the catalog to other materials with the same subject headings.

Early American Imprints
As you conduct searches in our online catalog for materials from the 17th century you will inevitably come across records to the vast Evans microfiche collection of Early American Imprints. These are part of "two distinct microfiche collections reproducing every existent book, pamphlet and broadside published in America from 1639 through 1800 (Early American Imprints. Series I, Evans) and  from 1801 to 1819 (Early American Imprints. Series II, Shaw-Shoemaker). These are the complete non-serial source materials of American history for the 17th and 18th centuries." Our collection which is limited to Series I,  is on microfiche, is completely cataloged and accessible through ASA, and  is an expansive source of primary materials. These works contain " information about every aspect of life in 17th and 18th  century America, from agriculture and auctions through foreign affairs, diplomacy, literature, music, religion, the Revolutionary War, temperance, witchcraft, and just about any other topic imaginable."

The Series I collection is based on Charles Evans' American Bibliography and the Supplement  to Evans' American Bibliography by Roger Bristol. The print copies of these bibliographies are available in the Library:

Charles Evans . American Bibliography   a chronological dictionary of all books, pamphlets, and periodical publications printed in theUnited States of America from the genesis of printing in 1639 down to and including the year 1820. With
bibliographical and biographical notes. 14 vols. 015.73 E92a . (The volumes are located in the Microfiche area, on the cabinets above the Evans, Early American Imprints Fiche Collection.)

Roger Bristol. Supplement to Evans' American Bibliography. 015.73 E92ab (Linderman Library - Reference Area)
