This handout provides basic instructions concerning
the log on and searching procedures for the CCH Federal and State Tax
Service. It is a web-based service provided by the CCH. Also there
are instructions for doing basic searching, hyperlink to documents, downloading
and printing of documents in the Help Topics section of this service.
Log on procedures.

Log on to the Lehigh home page
-
Click on the Libraries' button (located on the upper
right of the homepage).

Click on then click on Electronic Resources, then Databases.
-
Scroll down to the CCH Internet Tax Research Network
and click on it.
-
CCH Tax Research NetWork page appears. Click on the
"Enter" button. (A "Logging on" informational page appears. Just ignore
it as it is a passthrough page.)

CCH Tax Research NetWork home page appears
-
At this point you may view the ‘folders’, i.e., My CCH,
Federal or State, search for documents and/or read today’s tax news.

When finished, you may click on the "Log off" button.
-
A "Log Off" message appears. Click on the home page
or back buttons to return to your home page.
Search procedures.
You have options for searching the folders that
are available on this service. These are "Simple", "Power", Citation and
Citator. The "Simple" and "Power" searches are the most frequently used
options. Citation is for searching court decisions, laws, committee reports,
CCH’s explanations and CCH’s annotations. The Citator is for search for
items that cite a particular court decision, laws, committee reports, CCH’s
explanations and CCH’s annotations.
To search for an item:

Follow the Log on procedures.

Select the folder to search: My CCH, Federal or State.

Select the section(s) and/or item(s) within that folder
to search.

Note: You have with in a given folder, i.e., news, regulations,
courts decisions, annotations, IRC code, etc., to select for locating information
on your topic.

Type your search terms.
-
For "Simple" search: follow steps #2,3, and 5, click
on "Search" button.

For "Power" search: follow steps #2,3, and 5, click
on the "Search Options" button, pick appropriate options, i.e., Boolean
logic, and click on "Search" button.

Results box appears.

Scroll down the list. Either select the appropriate
document to display or start new search.

Either print the document and/or download it to a floppy
disk. NOTE: The long documents should be DOWNLOADED due their length.
Use the "Export to file" option on CCH or use the "Save As" command under
your browser’s File command.
General Comments

CCH Tax Network is IP authenticated. DO NOT USE
the new login box that states "Go directly to CCH Internet Tax Research
NetWork from your desktop: Click here to download Login Express".

Web version shows the "Tax Day" headlines".

Web version shows the folders available on this service
for use by Lehigh faculty, staff and students.

Speed of CCH Tax Service may be slower between 1PM-5PM
Monday-Friday! The reason is the heavy use nationwide during those hours.

Use the "Export to file" option or the "Save As" feature
in place of "Printing" feature to save long documents. This can be especially
true of court decisions, CCH annotations, etc.
Off Campus Connections/ISP Proxy Server
This explains the how to of setting up your computer
when you have a non-Lehigh ISP provider. Included are some documents that
will provide information on the proxy server. These are available on the
Lehigh Computing page. The procedure is:

Open your browser to the Lehigh home page.

Click on the "Computing" button. (This is located in
the upper right hand corner of the Lehigh home page.)

Select the "Computing Services" (located at the left
side of the page).

Select "Proxy Server" located under the "Off-Campus"
heading.

Follow the instructions for setting up the appropriate
proxy server for your browser and computer.
