Locating Books in the Library Online Catalog

SEARCHING TIPS

Use ASA, the library online catalog to search for books (monographs) dealing with the historical background of the conflicts in your assigned countries.
You can use the BROWSE SUBJECT feature to locate the various subject headings and subheadings assigned to the materials in our library on your country.

For instance, doing a Browse Subject search on Rwanda will retrieve the list of subject headings assigned to books on Rwanda. A portion of this list is displayed below:

Keyword searching is also an extremely useful tool. Any word or phrase descriptive of your topic can be searched as a Keyword/ANYWHERE search to locate books that deal with your research.

Your search will find your chosen words in any field of the book records, including Titles, Subjects, Notes and tables of contents fields. When you display the Detailed record for books that seem useful you will be shown the hypertext links to other books assigned similar subject headings. You can then use those links to connect to additional materials:

DATABASES FOR FINDING NEWSPAPER AND PERIODICAL ARTICLES

Academic Index (Infotrac)
This database covers a variety of major U.S. newspapers, newsmagazines and other periodical literature. Some of the articles are available in full text. Others you will need to find in the library catalog.

Dow Jones Interactive
While this database has a strong business and industry focus it also indexes a variety of general publications as well as foreign newspapers and news services. Software features the ability to limit searches to newspapers and publications from specific countries or world regions. Instructions for using this feature are listed below:

Narrowing your search in Dow Jones Interactive to publications from specific regions or countries:

Begin in the Search by Words and Phrases search screen.

Scroll down until you see the "CHANGE PUBLICATIONS" hypertext link. Click on it.

At the RIGHT side of the next screen there is a text box which lists the publications or categories already selected. Remove any of the existing selections by clicking on the REMOVE or REMOVE ALL buttons in the center of the screen.

On the same page, across the left side you can choose to view the publications available for selection arranged by Title, Region, Industry or Type.

Click on the word REGION. You will now have two text boxes on the left side of the screen.

From the upper box you can use the drop down menu to choose the continent or the continent:specific country. Depending on what you choose the lower box will display all the publications from that part of the world which are available in Dow Jones interactive.

Highlight individual titles or choose all the titles from that region by highlighting the "continent:country" choice. Click on the ADD button and your selection will move to the box on the right. Add as many as you need and then click on "SAVE LIST" button.

At the next screen enter a name for your publication file list. Click on " SAVE LIST" and after it processes, click on "CONTINUE." Your publication list will then be available for searching from the Search by Words and Phrases page.

Limiting your search in Dow Jones to a Specific Publication:

Begin in the Search by Words and Phrases search screen.

Scroll down until you see the "CHANGE PUBLICATIONS" hypertext link. Click on it.

At the RIGHT side of the next screen there is a text box which lists the publications or categories already selected. Remove any of the existing selections by clicking on the REMOVE or REMOVE ALL buttons in the center of the screen.

The default screen is an alphabetical list of all the titles* available. Find the publication in which you are interested. Highlight it and then press ADD. The title will move to the box on the left.

Now click on SAVE LIST. Create a file name for your publication, eg: my Sources or NYT, etc.

Click SAVE LIST and after it processes, click on CONTINUE. Your publication list will then be available for searching from the Search by Words and Phrases page.
