Books
There is one resource that will assist in locating items in the Lehigh University Libraries. It is:

  1. ASA, The Library's Online Catalog. This lists all the items in the library and their location.
  2. WorldCat. This is a catalog that lists over 44 million items including books, journals, audio-visual, CD-ROMs and software. These resources may be obtained via Lehigh's Interlibrary Loan.

Remember: Use ASA to locate books, journals, A-V materials, and CD-ROMs. Generally journal articles are NOT indexed in ASA and WorldCat. Subject headings included are:

  1. Export marketing.
  2. Exports.
  3. Import quotas.
  4. Imports.
  5. United States-commerce (you can put the name of any country, e.g., Mexico.)

Journal Indexes and Other Resources
The following indexes will provide citations on the topic. To access them, click on this URL: http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/. They are:
  1. ABI-Inform Dateline. Indexes resources with local and regional business news coverage of companies, business. and the economy.
  2. ABI-Inform Global. Indexes over 1400 journals in management and business. Coverage is from 1987 for most journals. About 45% of the articles are available in full text.
  3. ABI-Inform Trade & Industry. Indexes resources with a trade or industry focus
  4. Academic Index. (a.k.a. Infotrac)Covers over 1400 journal going back to 1980. Some articles are available in full text.
  5. Accounting and Tax Index. Available only in print and is shelved in Index Section, Reference, Fairchild Library. Formerly called the Accountant's Index, Supplement
  6. America: History and Life. This covers articles related to America and Canada. This is available in print and on the Web since 1964.
  7. CIAO Columbia International Affairs Online is designed to be the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 on from a variety of sources including university research institutes and conferences.
  8. CQ Researcher. Your complete source on the most current and controversial issues of the day with complete summaries, all the pros and cons, bibliographies and more.
  9. CQ Weekly Report. This is your weekly source covering Capitol Hill with legislative news and analysis of issues.
  10. Econlit. A good index for the research journals that cover economic information from a research perspective.
  11. EIU ViewsWire This provides information and statistics on important economic, political and market developments and for over 200 countries and the six continents. Also there are concise analytical briefings on their implications for business.
  12. Factiva. Its publications library covers over 8000 publications (full text) back to early 1980's. This is the replacement for Dow Jones Interactive.
  13. Historical Abstracts. This is an excellent source for Europe and the rest of the world. It is a twin to America: History and Life. Coverage goes back to 1955 in print and on the Web.
  14. Lexis Nexis Academic. Provides full text of journals, newspapers, and wire services relating to business information. It also has full text legal materials such court decisions, legislation and regulations.
  15. NBER Working Papers Series (from National Bureau of Economic Affairs).
  16. PAIS International (public affairs). Good source for information on government and public policy issues.
  17. Research Library. Covers over 1800 journals in a variety of subject areas with some available in full text.

These resources provide another way of locating leads for your products. The articles may have addresses of companies and governmental agencies, statistics (includes those who gathered these figures), and the names of organizations that produced these items and information on a country. This can be vital to a successful marketing program in the country and/or a region where the product (or service) may be sold.


Statistical Indexes And Resources
  1. Index to International Statistics: IIS. Washington, CIS, 1983-. 310.016/I38/FM-1-REF
  2. Lexis Nexis Statistical. This is compilation of statistics from a variety of sources some of which are available in print and/or on the fiche at Fairchild Library. NOTE: Web version does not have all of the statistics that are available in print.
  3. STAT-USA. This is a compendium of government statistical information on the Web. (To locate this item, follow the directions for locating the Journal Indexes.) It has two sections. The first one is entitled the "State of the Nation". It gives information on general economic conditions in the United States, i.e., Consumer Price Index and Leading Economic Indicators. The second one is entitled "Globus & NTDB". This has international information including the National Trade Data Bank and Country Commercial Guides.

  2. International Financial Statistics. Washington, IMF. 332.05/I61i/FM-1-Ref
  3. Japan Statistical Yearbook. 315.2/J35/FM-1-Ref
  4. Russia & Eurasia Facts and Figures Annual. Gulf Breeze, Fl., Academic International Press. 314.7/U11a/FM-1-Ref. (Formerly titled USSR Facts and Figures).
  5. SourceOECD. This resource has economic statistics for countries through its monographs, periodicals and statistical databases.
  6. Statistical Abstract of Latin America. 318/C153s/FM-1-Ref
  7. Statistical Abstract of the United States. 317.3/U58s/FM-1-R-Ref. Current volume is kept in Ready Reference at Fairchild and on CD-ROM in Government Documents section of the Fairchild Library. Included at the end of each table is the original source for that set of statistics.

World Wide Web
Using a search engine, e.g., Google, you will find information that may be useful.  Examples are government, associations, and companies.   They provide facts, figures, and reports that may be important to your research.  There are multi-search engines that makes searching the Web more efficient.  Dogpile.com is an example of these multi-search engines.  Remember: anyone can put up a web page with information. Is the information on the web page reliable ?

These are good sites for statistics on the economy, population, etc., from the Federal Government. They are:

  1. Bureau of Economic Analysis. URL is http://www.bea.gov/.
  2. Bureau of Labor Statistics. URL is http://www.bls.gov/.
  3. Federal Statistics site. URL is http://www.fedstats.gov/.
  4. U.S. Census Bureau. URL is http://www.census.gov/.

Additional Resources
These resources may assist in locating information on a country including its culture, economic situation, and population. They are:
  1. America's Newspapers. This has full text content of over 650 U.S. newspapers with the back runs varying for each title.
  2. Area Handbooks produced by the Army. Look for the name of a particular country, ex. Turkey to locate the latest edition of this book via ASA.
  3. Associations Unlimited. Good resource to locate cultural, ethnic and business groups related to international marketing.
  4. Culturgrams: the nations around us / developed by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, Brigham Young University. Garrett Park, MD: Garrett Park Press, c1995. 909.828/C968/1995/L-1-Ref
  5. Encyclopedia Britannica is available to answer questions concerning a country, a culture, and/or an industry. This can be vital to a successful marketing program in the country and/or a region where the product (or service) can be sold.
  6. Foreign Government Resources on the Web. Comprehensive gateway to foreign government sites and other sources of foreign government information from The University of Michigan.(Use this in conjunction with the Electronic Embassy for more resources.)
  7. Human Relations Area Files This is a unique database which facilitates research and study of human culture, society and behavior. This may assist with cultural aspects of your paper.
  8. IMF Staff Country Reports in Full Text The International Monetary Fund has made some staff country reports available to the public. Their coverage includes issues such as recent economic developments and policies, poverty, banking, etc.
  9. Investext. An excellent resource getting information on companies, industries and product information from over 500 Wall Street and international brokerage firms.
  10. Political Risk Yearbook. 320.9/P769/FM-1-Ref. Although dated, it is still a good source for locating quantitative and qualitative information on a country.
  11. Portals to the World from the Library of Congress contains selective links providing authoritative, in-depth information about the nations and other areas of the world.

  13. World Bank, World Development Indicators. Its URL is http://www.worldbank.org/data/countrydata/countrydata.html.
  14. World Factbook. Washington, D.C.:Central Intelligence Agency: G.P.O., [distributor], 1981-. 910/W927/FM-1-REF. Its URL is http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html.

Listed below are some web sites that can assist in locating information on a country, product, industry, and /or market. Some will have links to other sites that may have more information on your topic. They are:

  1. Business Information Service for the Newly Independent States BISNIS is the Department of Commerce's primary resource center for U.S. companies exploring business opportunities in Russia and other Newly Independent States. BISNIS provides U.S. companies with the latest market reports and tips on developments, export and investment opportunities, and strategies for doing business in the NIS. Its URL is http://www.bisnis.doc.gov/.
  2. BusinessCulture.com. It URL is http://www.businessculture.com/. It has section entitled "Doing Business In'' which contains links to more than 100 foreign countries. If further information is needed, a detailed report of resources for each country such as nonverbal communication and corporate gift giving is available for a small fee.
  3. Communicaid: Global Communication A commercial site with a good section on select countries' business culture.
  4. Country Briefings from the Economist. For each country it has brought together succinct forecasts, economic and political profiles, core statistics, essential recent articles and in-depth surveys from The Economist. Its. URL is http://www.economist.com/countries/.
  5. Country Profiles. Its URL is http://nt1.ids.ac.uk/eldis/newcountry.htm
  6. Cultural Tips for Doing Business Abroad. Good source for locating customs and practices in the listed countries. Its URL is http://www.getcustoms.com/.
  7. ELDIS: gateway to development information. Its URL is http://nt1.ids.ac.uk/eldis/.
  8. Electronic Embassy. This embassy site, made up of the foreign embassies in Washington, D.C., can provide quantitative and qualitative information, links to associations, companies, etc., and governmental agencies involved in foreign business transactions for a given country. (Use this in conjunction with the Foreign Government Resources on the Web for more resources.)
  9. Financial Crises in Emerging Markets. Its URL is http://www.nber.org/crisis/.
  10. International Trade Resources from FTIA:Federation of International Trade Associations . Its URL is http://fita.org/webindex.
  11. Marco Polo: The Cross-Cultural Marketing Edge. It is an excellent overview of the topics related to international marketing. Shaben & Associates International Consultants, Vancouver prepared this for Industry Canada (this is a Canadian government agency).
  12. To locate maps of a country, use this URL for maps http://maps.google.com/.

The Library has created a web page for government information including Federal, state, local and international materials. It is called Government Information at Lehigh University Library. Its URL is http://www.Lehigh.EDU/library/govdocs/. This is an excellent starting point for locating relevant material to do research on a country and/or a topic.


Final Thoughts
Think beyond the Lehigh campus. There are many resources that are not available on campus here BUT out there in the world.
