Importing Records from EconLit into EndNote

  • Go to “Start” button in Windows.
  • Select Programs, then “EndNote”, then “EndNote Program”.
  • "Select a Reference Library:” window appears. Close this.
  • Select the “File” menu and select “New”.
  • The “New reference library” window appears.
  • Double-click on the “Examples” folder and type in econlit.enl or an appropriate file name, for example econlit1.enl.
  • Click on the Save button
  • The “econlit.enl” library window appears
  • To see if EndNote has an import filter for Econlit, drag down the “File” menu, click “Import filters”, and then click “Open filter manager…”. Scroll to see if the “EconLit (OCLC)” filter is there. If so, close it. If not, ask the instructor, who will lead you through the instructions at the bottom of this page.
  • Close the Import Filter Manager by clicking on the x in the upper right hand corner.
  • Open your web browser.
  • Go to http://www.Lehigh.EDU/~inref/databases/index.html and select EconLit.
  • When the “Basic Search” interface appears, type in Gunter, Frank, then click on the Author option. Click on the “Search” button.
  • Results appear. Mark the ones to be saved.
  • Click on the export button.
  • A window appears labeled “Direct Export Records”.
  • Click “Export” button.
  • EndNote window appears with “Select a Reference Library:” window open. Double-click on the examples folder and click on econlit.enl.
  • Click on “Open” button
  • “Choose An Import Filter” window appears. Scroll to EconLit (OCLC) and select it. Then, click on the “Choose” button.
  • The results of the Gunter search appear in the library “econlit.enl”.

NOTE: A later import filter for EconLit (OCLC) than the one that came with your software may be available. If you really want to play it safe, go to http://www.endnote.com/support/ensupport.asp

  • Click on the link labeled “Update to the latest Filters”.
  • On the table, locate the filter for EconLit for OCLC FirstSearch. (You can sort by information provider, database, or date.)
  • Click on “FTP”, which appears in the “Link” column.
  • “Save As..” window appears. Click on c:/, Program Files, EndNote, Filters. (It may already default to the Filters folder.)
  • Type “EconLit_(OCLC)date.enf” [putting in the current date].
  • Click on “Save”
  • Close EndNote and restart the EndNote program.

The latest filter should now appear in the filter manager.
