What is the upgrade?
Banner 8 delivers functional and technical improvements to Banner. Lehigh must implement upgrades to Banner to retain support from the vendor and to remain in compliance with Federal Regulations (i.e. Financial Aid, Tax Laws).  Banner 8 changes include enhanced security features, expanded field lengths, and a new character set to support globalization.

Banner 8 will provide support for international characters and expanded name, address, telephone number, and identifier fields that adhere to Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council (PESC) and US Postal Service standards. In addition to these expanded bio-demographic fields, Banner 8 will also provide support for longer currency amount fields in Banner General and Banner Finance.

Why does Banner need to be down so long?
Banner has several modules, General, Student, Financial Aid, Accounts Receivable, Advancement, Finance and Human Resources. Each module contains many forms with data stored in hundreds of tables.   The new character set requires that the Oracle database used to store data must be converted.  That means millions of rows of data must be converted to the new character set.  In addition, various changes to forms and programs that run Banner must be upgraded.  The work needs to be done while no one is logged on to Banner.
