FRS versus Banner

Chart of Accounts (design and terminology)

An account number in FRS is referred to as a FOAPAL in Banner.FOAPAL is an acronym for the components of an account number in Banner: Fund, Orgn, Account, Program, Activity and Location codes.

For ease of transition from FRS to Banner, most current FRS account numbers have been set up as Account Indexes in Banner.Using an Account Index in Banner will be similar to using the current six digit account number in FRS and will provide a shortcut to trying to remember all the components of a Banner FOAPAL.

Again to ease transition from FRS to Banner, in most cases the Banner Account Code is similar to the FRS subcode with the addition of a leading character to indicate revenue (5xxxx), salary expenses (6xxxx) and non-salary expenses (7xxxx).This coding scheme takes advantage of Banner’s ability to roll up or select financial information using wild cards in Banner queries.
