Q. Can I buy an iPhone at a discounted education price?
A. No. Neither Apple nor AT&T are currently offering discounts on iPhone hardware.
Q. Does Lehigh support the iPhone?
A. Yes! The iPhone and iPod Touch are supported at Lehigh to the extent that Apple's technology implementation allows. Please read the rest of the FAQ for important details.
Q. Does the iPhone work on Lehigh's secure Wi-Fi network "lu"?
A. Yes, but not out-of-the-box. Lehigh uses the "802.1X/WEP" standard for secure authentication to the wireless network "lu". The iPhone cannot be automatically configured for 802.1X/WEP. To enable your iPhone or iPod Touch (2.x or later firmware only) for Lehigh's wireless network "lu", click the following link from your iPhone's browser while connected via 3G, EDGE or another wireless network: http://www.lehigh.edu/iphone/lu.mobileconfig
Click Install when prompted, enter your userID and password, and Accept the certificate presented.
Q. Can Lehigh employees purchase the iPhone through our AT&T Corporate Plan?
A. Yes!. AT&T offers several business plans that are available at a discount through Lehigh's AT&T representative, including options for global data roaming.
There is no discount on the iPhone equipment itself.
Lehigh faculty and staff are eligible for an employee discount on an AT&T individual responsibility (personal) plan for the iPhone 3G and 3GS only.
Q. Does the iPhone work with Lehigh email?
A. Yes! The iPhone supports the IMAP and ESMTP standards used at Lehigh, including support for IMAP mail folders. Setting up email on the iPhone is similar to other IMAP email clients. See link at left for detailed instructions.
Q.
Can I sync my Calendar with the iPhone?
A. Possibly. The answer depends on what Calendar you are using. The iPhone can sync calendar information either 1) dynamically over-the-air or 2) when connecting to iTunes on a personal computer via iPhone dock or USB cable. OTA (over-the-air) calendar syncing is the preferred method as the information is always up to date, not "as of the last time you connected to your computer".
iPhone 3.0 supports OTA sync out-of-the-box for Mobile Me and Google Calendar using ActiveSync. Oracle Calendar can be synced OTA by purchasing the 3rd party application ToDo+Cal+Sync, which uses SyncML. However, this app syncs only to its own calendar on the iPhone, not the native Calendar app, and alerts are not supported.
Q. Can I sync the iPhone with more than one computer?
A. Yes, with caveats. Apple has designed the iPhone to work seamlessly when used with a single computer (Mac or PC) or MobileMe. Manual configuration of iTunes does allow for syncing certain items on one computer and certain items on another. For example, Contacts and Calendars might sync on a Mac at work, while Music, Photos, Podcasts and Apps might sync on a Mac at home. Only one computer can be designated for automatic syncing, however, and that computer is also the one on which all iPhone updates should be performed. Syncing of some items like Contacts and Calendars can also be accomplished over-the-air, for example using Google or Apple's MobileMe service.
Q. Does the iPhone have a memory card?
A. No. The iPhone's built-in storage is used for all media that is synced through iTunes. Photos taken with built-in camera are stored on the iPhone and can then be transferred to a computer over USB using digital camera software such as iPhoto, or sent as email from the iPhone.
Q. What about "unlocking" the iPhone to installing 3rd-party applications?
A. LTS does not recommend nor support unauthorized modifications to the iPhone such as "jailbreaking" to install 3rd-party applications. We recommend applications be installed only through Apple's App Store.
