AAUW International Fellowships
Description: International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported. Several fellowships are available for study outside of the U.S.

Alexander von Humboldt Professorship
Description:  Academics of all disciplines from abroad, who are internationally recognized as leaders in their field and who are expected to contribute to enhancing Germany's sustained international competitiveness as a research location in consequence of the award, are eligible to be nominated for an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.  The Alexander von Humboldt Professorship, which is being financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the International Research Fund for Germany, enables award winners to carry out long-term and ground-breaking research at universities and research institutions in Germany. The prize money, totaling 5 million EUR for academics in experimental disciplines and 3.5 million EUR for researchers in theoretical disciplines, is being made available for a period of five years.

Eisenhower Fellowships
Description: The USA program provides overseas exposure of 4-5 weeks designed to enhance Fellows’ professional and personal growth, develop new contacts, and promote the exchange of ideas and international understanding. Fellows have meetings with leaders in their field, as well as cultural site visits and hospitality by local citizens.

Fellowship for Field Research, Korea Foundation
Description: Support is provided for scholars who are university professors and instructors, doctoral candidates, professional researchers at research institutes and other qualified professionals who want to conduct field research on relevant subjects in Korea. Duration is from three to twelve months. Fellows receive a monthly stipend and round-trip international airfare.  The sponsor provides support to scholars and professional researchers who want to conduct field research on relevant subjects in Korea. Fulbright Scholar Program
Description: The core Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals.

Description: The Fulbright Specialists Program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals. Shorter grant lengths give specialists greater flexibility to pursue a grant that works best with their current academic or professional commitments.

German Chancellor Fellowship for Prospective Leaders
Description: Submit an application if you are a prospective leader from the USA, the Russian Federation or the People's Republic of China and, having completed your first degree (at least a Bachelor's or comparable degree), have subsequently gained work experience and have already shown outstanding leadership potential in your career. A German Chancellor Fellowship allows you to carry out a project of your own design in cooperation with a German host you have selected.  The programme is under the patronage of the German Chancellor and also incorporates an intensive language course in Germany, a four-week introductory seminar in Bonn and Berlin, a study trip around Germany and a final meeting in Berlin. These activities provide additional insights into the social, cultural, economic and political life of Germany.  Candidates from all professions and disciplines, but especially individuals in the humanities, law, social sciences and economics, are eligible to apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly. The Humboldt Foundation grants up to ten German Chancellor Fellowships annually for prospective leaders from each of the three countries named.

German Studies Research Grant
Description: The program is designed to encourage research and promote the study of cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of contemporary German affairs from inter- and multidisciplinary perspectives for short-term research (one to two months) in either North America or Germany.

IREX Short-term travel grants
Description: The Short-Term Travel Grants Program (STG) is a flexible fellowship offering support to postdoctoral scholars and professionals to conduct research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia on issues relevant to the US Government.
Because STG supports research for a maximum of eight weeks, fellows have the ability to conduct shorter research trips without significantly affecting their teaching and work schedules.

Humboldt Research Award

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers
Description: Submit an application if you are a researcher from abroad with above average qualifications, completed your doctorate less than twelve years ago, already have your own research profile and are working at least at the level of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Group Leader or have a record of several years of independent academic work. A Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers allows you to carry out a long-term research project (6-18 months) you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution in Germany. The fellowship is flexible and can be divided up into as many as three stays within three years.

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers
Description: Submit an application if you are a researcher from abroad with above average qualifications, at the beginning of your academic career and only completed your doctorate in the last four years. A Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows you to carry out a long-term research project (6-24 months) you have selected yourself in cooperation with an academic host you have selected yourself at a research institution in Germany.  Scientists and scholars of all nationalities and disciplines may apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation directly at any time. The Humboldt Foundation grants approximately 600 Humboldt Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers and experienced researchers annually. International Collaboration in Chemistry Between U.S. Investigators and Their Counterparts Abroad
Description: The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between U.S. and foreign investigators. Description: The JWT Jones Travelling Fellowship is designed to promote international cooperation in chemistry. Description: The Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) program seeks to catalyze a higher level of international engagement in the U.S. science and engineering community by supporting innovative, international research and education collaborations. Postdoctoral Fellowships, University of Western Australia
Description: Departments of the University of Western Australia may apply for a University Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The fellowship scheme is open to all, irrespective of nationality or residence at the time of application. Fellowships are normally awarded to accomplished researchers who have held a Ph.D. for no more than five years. Appointment is for three years (full-time) or four years (75 percent research/25 percent teaching). This year up to three new fellowships will be available.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award
Description: Submit an application if you are a successful top-rank junior researcher from abroad, only completed your doctorate with distinction in the last six years, and have published work in prestigious international journals or publishing houses. The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award allows you to spend five years building up working groups and working on a high-profile, innovative research project of your own choice at a research institution of your own choice in Germany.

Thesiger Oman International Fellowships
Description: The sponsor offers two annual fellowships up to £8,000 for geographical research in the Middle East and other arid regions of the world as a memorial to Sir Wilfred Thesiger.  The aim is to support outstanding research on some aspects of fieldwork in arid/desert environments, with a priority for research within the Middle East, reflecting Thesiger’s interests and the regions he visited. The main objective of the research must be to advance geographical knowledge of arid environments. One fellowship supports research into the physical geography of arid and semi arid environments, the other the human dimension of arid and semi arid environments. The proposed project should include fieldwork.

U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation: Cooperative Grants Program
Description:  At the core of CRDF's activities is the Cooperative Grants Program (CGP). Launched as CRDF's first initiative in 1995, the program provides up to two years of support for joint U.S. and Eurasian research teams in all areas of basic and applied research in the natural sciences. The program offers an avenue into new research directions and collaborative opportunities for both U.S. and Eurasian scientists and engineers. Whitaker Awards
Description: A Whitaker International Fellow or Scholar experience will ideally advance an emerging biomedical engineering career, while also advancing the goal of increased international collaboration in BME.  Grantees will come from diverse geographic areas of the United States and they will conduct their Whitaker Fellow or Scholar activity in diverse regions of the world. Description: Open to women with post-graduate degrees and proof of ability to carry out research in Mumbai, India. Recipient is provided free accommodation and partially free board in the Women Graduates Union's hostel for working women. In addition a small cash stipend is provided. The award does not cover travel or any other incidental expenses.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program
Description: English Teaching Assistantships are offered in many countries worldwide. Each ETA Program is designed by the host country, and individual elements may vary by country. In most cases, ETAs:

  • Are placed in schools or universities outside of capital cities
  • Are assigned various activities designed to improve their students' language abilities and knowledge of the United States
  • Are fully integrated into the host community, increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country
  • May pursue individual study/research plans in addition to ETA responsibilities (see Tips for further information on Statement of Purpose for ETAs)

Applicants for English Teaching Assistantships can apply to only one country. Multi-country ETA projects will not be considered.

ICCS Graduate Student Scholarship
Description: Up to ten grants are awarded world-wide to Masters and Doctoral candidates to undertake thesis-related research on Canada at a Canadian university for 4-6 weeks. Up to C$3,500 is available for all expenses. An additional amount of C$1,500 may also be available to students who choose to undertake their award at participating universities.

International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management

National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students - 2012 Application Now Open
Description: The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) is a flagship international fellowship program for developing the next generation of globally  engaged U.S. scientists and engineers knowledgeable about the Asian and Pacific regions. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.

NSF recognizes the importance of enabling U.S. researchers and educators to advance their work through international collaborations and the value of ensuring that future generations of U.S. scientists and engineers gain professional experience beyond this nation's borders early in their careers. The program is intended for U.S. graduate students pursuing studies in fields supported by the National Science Foundation. Pan-American Advances Studies Institutes Program
Description: The Pan American Advanced Study Institutes (PASI) Program, is a jointly supported initiative between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Pan American Advanced Studies Institutes are short courses ranging in length from ten days to one month duration, involving lectures, demonstrations, research seminars and discussions at the advanced graduate and post-doctoral level.

Singapore International Graduate Award
Description: The Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) is a collaboration between the Agency for Science, Technology & Research (ASTAR), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). PhD training will be carried out in English at the recipient's chosen lab at ASTAR Research Institutes, NUS or NTU. Students will be supervised by distinguished and world-renowned researchers in these labs. Upon successful completion, students will be conferred a PhD degree by either NUS or NTU.

U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation: Cooperative Grants Program
Description:  At the core of CRDF's activities is the Cooperative Grants Program (CGP). Launched as CRDF's first initiative in 1995, the program provides up to two years of support for joint U.S. and Eurasian research teams in all areas of basic and applied research in the natural sciences. The program offers an avenue into new research directions and collaborative opportunities for both U.S. and Eurasian scientists and engineers. Such collaborations strengthen the quality of foreign research, provide opportunities for junior researchers and female scientists, support the redirection of former weapons scientists to civilian research and establish the background of knowledge and technology on which successful and profitable industry and business partnerships may be built.

Whitaker Awards
Description: A Whitaker International Fellow or Scholar experience will ideally advance an emerging biomedical engineering career, while also advancing the goal of increased international collaboration in BME.  Grantees will come from diverse geographic areas of the United States and they will conduct their Whitaker Fellow or Scholar activity in diverse regions of the world. Candidates may apply to study or do research in any country outside of the U.S., except Canada, because it is contiguous with the United States, and the international experience is minimized.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Description: The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program provides scholarships to U.S. undergraduates with financial need for study abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations. Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, Gilman Scholarships provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit. Students studying critical need languages are eligible for up to $3,000 in additional funding as part of the Gilman Critical Need Language Supplement program. Boren Scholarships
Description: Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes
Description: The CLS Program provides fully-funded seven to ten week group-based intensive language instruction and extensive cultural enrichment experiences held overseas at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels (beginning not offered for Azerbaijani, Chinese, Persian or Russian) for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships
Description: The scholarship is provided for intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country for three or six months.  The sponsor provides scholarships to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish.

DAAD Scholarships and Fellowships
Description: Scholarships, internships, and exchange programs designed for undergraduate students who wish to study in Germany.

DegreedUP Scholarships
Description: DegreedUP.com is proud to renew up to four $1,250 cash scholarships for the college year. Any student that attends a university, community college or technical college may apply. A student must be accepted or attending the college in order to apply for the scholarship.

EMGIP—Bundestag Internship
Description: EMGIP (Émigré Memorial German Internship Program) offers internship opportunities in the German parliament, the Bundestag, for US and Canadian students who are fluent in German.  The internships are two months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program
Description: English Teaching Assistantships are offered in many countries worldwide.
Each ETA Program is designed by the host country, and individual elements may vary by country.
In most cases, ETAs:

  • Are placed in schools or universities outside of capital cities
  • Are assigned various activities designed to improve their students' language abilities and knowledge of the United States
  • Are fully integrated into the host community, increasing their own language skills and knowledge of the host country
  • May pursue individual study/research plans in addition to ETA responsibilities (see Tips for further information on Statement of Purpose for ETAs)

Applicants for English Teaching Assistantships can apply to only one country. Multi-country ETA projects will not be considered.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Description: The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study abroad for one academic year. The Program also includes an important English Teaching Assistant component.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Description: Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge.
The programme aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.

George Mitchell Scholarship Program
Description: The Mitchell Scholars Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: scholarship, leadership, and a sustained commitment to community and public service. The Mitchell Scholars Program provides tuition, accommodations, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.

Description: The Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) program seeks to catalyze a higher level of international engagement in the U.S. science and engineering community by supporting innovative, international research and education collaborations. Research Internships in Science and Engineering, German Academic Exchange Service
Description: The sponsor provides support for undergraduate students from the US, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering for a summer research internship in Germany. RISE summer placements take place with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany. The RISE interns are matched with a doctoral student whom they assist and who will also serve as their mentor.

Study and Internship (SIP) in Germany
Description: Run jointly by German Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS 7) and DAAD, SIP provides students the opportunity to study for a full semester together with German and international students at one of Germany’s leading universities of applied sciences followed by a six month, hands-on, professional internship experience in a company or research institute.  Students in the fields of engineering, computer science, natural sciences, business, management, economics, architecture, art and design, social work, or journalism are welcome to apply.

University Summer Course in Germany
Description: This program, meant to help undergraduates build their language skills while studying anything from film to politics to engineering, provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three- to four week summer courses taught in German at German universities which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political, and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany.  Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material.
