Working on Sustainable Development: What-How-Who

Faculty representing a variety of disciplines are involved in facilitating a seminar on sustainable development this semester (ES/STS 396). The goal of the course is to provide students with an overview of sustainable development theory and prepare them to participate in the 2012 World Summit (Rio plus 20) which is being planned by the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development. In order to help with these goals, our partners at the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development have agreed to present a workshop at Lehigh University on October 15th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Workshop presenters will include Dr. Tariq Banuri (Director, United Nations Division for Sustainable Development), along with two of his colleagues who are internationally recognized experts in the field of sustainable development. Workshop topics will include: A UN perspective on sustainable development and a review of some specific themes such as water and energy issues. Part of the workshop will also be devoted to helping our students develop specific proposals for projects which will form the basis of a spring semester course which will lead to possible participation in the Rio Plus 20 Summit to held in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Beyond Aid: Rethinking Approaches to International Development in Education

There is a heated debate over whether billions of dollars given for educational aid have contributed to educational improvement and equity around the world. Growing skepticism regarding the effectiveness of international aid has government agencies and international organizations re-examining the distribution of aid. At the same time, the emergence of entrepreneurial philanthropists, celebrity donors, and various market-driven approaches to international development have begun to alter the international aid landscape. The conference invites participants to explore possible future directions of aid to education, and asks the following questions:
- Can aid solve longstanding educational development challenges?
- Should we begin to think beyond educational aid by critically analyzing the larger picture of development and the underlying causes of global inequality?
- How can international educational aid be re-conceptualized with a more informed sense of social justice and participatory dialogue?
