The Department serves in an advisory capacity to two essential Lehigh publications: the campus newspaper, The Brown and White, and the Epitome yearbook. The Brown & White The Brown and White began publication more than 100 years ago, Jan. 16, 1894. Unlike the majority of college newspapers, The Brown and White is a student publication in the truest sense. Its articles are assigned, written and edited by students. Its editorial policy is set by a board comprised of students, without interference from faculty or administration. The role of the journalism faculty, who do not review or even see the publication prior to printing, is to give the staff guidance and technical support. The Brown and White was one of the earliest newspapers
in the country online -- its first web edition was published in 1994 and
is now available at http://www.thebrownandwhite.com
Many universities have discontinued the production of yearbooks because of lack of funds and interest. The Epitome was first published in 1875, by the class of 1878 in its sophomore year. It continues to be an award-winning publication that captures the history and memories of Lehigh. The 2000 and 2001 editions of the Epitome were selected for a top award from the Printing Industries of America Premier Print Awards Competition. Known as the industry's most prestigious awards program, the award goes to the work that exemplifies the highest standards in the industry. The 2001 Epitome, under the editorship of Kristin Tedesco '99 and Ali Mack '01, was also selected to be featured on the DaVor Photography Web site gallery. More information about the Epitome is available at http://www.lehigh.edu/~inyear
