Past IMI-NFG Research Exchange (RE) Participants

Holly Moschiano, Alfred University, US:
June 2006 was spent in Okayama Japan , thanks in part to an IMI-NSF Research Exchange Grant. The month spent in Japan was truly a wonderful experience. While in Japan I was able to learn many things from some of the leading researchers in biomaterials and bioactive glasses.

While in Japan , I learned how bioactive glass is synthesized and how it behaves in the body. This exchange supplemented my research at Alfred University , which focused on antibacterial and bactericidal glaze characterization. I found it interesting to compare different biological reactions (antibacterial vs. bioactive) with different materials. It is my hope that future collaboration will occur between Okayama and Alfred Universities.

The time spent in Japan was an invaluable experience. I learned a lot about Japanese and Asian culture, cuisine and language, which will prove important, as the area becomes a leader in science and technology. I also was fortunate enough to meet many kind and generous people whom I am glad to now call my friends.
