NOTE: IMP is not intended to replace Netscape mail, but it can be useful for checking your email while travelling or on vacation. IMP works from any networked computer and requires no setup other than logging in.

ABOUT IMP

What is IMP?

IMP is a  web-based  mail system that is available to Lehigh faculty, staff, and students. IMP does not replace Netscape Messenger, the recommended mail client at Lehigh. The intended purpose of IMP is for use while you are away from campus or on vacation. This program allows you to check e-mail from any computer connected to the Internet without configuring a browser for Netscape  mail or other browser-specific mail client. To use IMP, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/imp and log in with the normal lehigh username and password. PLEASE NOTE: This service is not intended to be used as the primary e-mail client.

How does IMP compare to Netscape Messenger for email?

IMP  is simple to use, requires little or no configuration, and can be accessed from any Web browser. However, it lacks the wide range of features offered through Netscape mail. You can send, read, and delete mail; create folders and move messages into folders; and send and receive attachments. However there is no address book feature, no mail filter capability, and only limited options for viewing and manipulating mail.  Furthermore,  IMP can be cumbersome to navigate.  IMP should not be considered a replacement for Netscape mail.

Will using IMP cause problems with Netscape Mail?

Using IMP should have no effect on your ability to use Netscape mail. Changes you make to your mail messages in IMP will be reflected in your Netscape mail. For example, if you delete messages in IMP, the messages will be gone when you log into Netscape mail.

Is IMP the same as IMAP?

IMP is Web-based mail software, while  IMAP is a protocol that is used for accessing email.  Lehigh's IMP mail system uses the IMAP protocol. We also recommend that you use IMAP when configuring Netscape messenger. For more information on IMAP, see the help desk FAQ document on IMAP.

USING IMP

How do I log in to IMP?

At your Web browser, connect to http://www.lehigh.edu/imp. At the login page [Login screenshot], enter your four-letter Lehigh userid and password.

How do I send mail?

When you log in, IMP will display your Inbox [Inbox screenshot]. On the menu on the left there is a Compose link. Click on Compose to open an e-mail message. When you are done composing the message, click Send Message and your mail will be sent.

Can I send or receive an attachment with IMP?

Yes, you can send and receive attachments. When you browse your incoming mail, IMP notes  a message with an attachment  by putting an icon to the right of the message. To view the message click on the Subject link for that  message.  IMP lists attachments in the Parts section of the message header  [message screenshot], and you can click on the attachment to open it. Note that in order to open some kinds of documents, you may need to have a copy of the program that created the document (e.g., Microsoft Word).

To attach a document to outgoing mail, first click on the Compose link (on the blue bar under the Lehigh logo) to start a mail message [Compose screenshot]. Then click on the Browse button and you will be prompted to browse through your local files. Select the file you wish to attach and click on the Attach button.

How do I delete my messages?

The delete/undelete options appear when you browse mail [Browse screenshot]. In order to delete any e-mail, you first put a checkmark  in the box to the left of the message. Then click the Delete messages button at the bottom. This will mark any deleted messages as Trash (a trash icon appears to the left of the message).  To permenently delete them, click on the Empty Trash button at the bottom right-hand side of the screen.

Can I undelete messages?

You can undelete messages any time up until you click on the Empty Trash button. To undelete, remove the checkmarks from the messages you wish to keep, then press Undelete. If you accidentally delete messages permanently by clicking Empty Trash, you can request a file reload via the help desk (call 758-4357).

I have a lot of mail. How can I see my new messages on the first screen?

You can sort your mail by by date, sender, subject, or size, in ascending or descending order. The top of the Inbox has a yellow bar:

On the far left of the bar is a clickable triangle which "toggles" ascending or descending order.  In the same yellow bar, click whether you want to sort by Date, From (sender), Subject, or Size.

Some of my mail messages have a checkmark to the left. What does this mean?

The checkmark to the left of your mail message means that you have responded to it. This is not the same as the checkbox which can be used to delete/undelete mail, which you can toggle on and off.  In the image below, the big gray check indicates that a reply to the message has been sent.

How do I create a new folder in IMP?

Click on the Folders link on the left-hand blue bar. This will take you to a page [Folders screenshot] where you are presented with options for adding and deleting folders. Enter the name of the new folder in the New Folder field and click Create This Folder. Deleting and renaming is also done in this way.

How do I view an existing folder that does not appear in the drop down menu (subscribing a folder)?

In order to be able to view your existing  mail with IMP you must Subscribe to the folder you wish to browse.
Click on the Folders  link to view a page of options for folders [Folders screenshot]. The first option is Manage Subscription Folders. Click on the the drop down menu under Manage Subscription Folders and select the folder which contains the mail you want to browse.  Click Subscribe, which will enable you to browse this folder. From this menu you can also unsubscribe a folder, create a new folder, rename a folder, and undelete a folder.

How do I create a folder within an existing folder?

All mail folders are in a directory "mail." To create a folder within an existing mail folder, you must specify the path of the folder in the New Folder text entry box. For example, to create a subfolder Marketing in a folder Projects within your mail folder, you would enter the  path and foldername  mail/Projects/Marketing and click Create this folder:

When you click on the inbox dropdown menu, you should see the projects/marketing subfolder (if the projects folder is subscribed):

What does bounce mean?

When you view a message, you will see the option to Bounce. When you Bounce an e-mail  message,  the message is sent  in original form to the recipient you specify. You are not given an opportunity to add comments or preface the sent message when you bounce it.

Logging Out

To log out of IMP mail simply click on the logout link on the menu on the left. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LOG OUT OF IMP WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED.

IMP PROBLEMS

I keep getting "Data Missing" error messages as I navigate back and forth in IMP. What is wrong?

Avoid using the Netscape Back and Forward icons; instead, use the links on the screens of the IMP application.

When I try to change the sort order of my mail, IMP does not retain the setting. What is wrong?

This is apparently a  feature or bug in the IMP software.
