1. How can I prevent early installation of IE 7 on my home or residence hall computer?

Microsoft Windows will present you with a prompt to install IE 7:

autoupdate screen

Respond "Don't install" to this prompt.

2. I know IE 7 is not fully tested but I would still like to install it. How do I install IE 7?

To download the software, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

If you have trouble with the uninstall, a good temporary "workaround" is to use Mozilla FireFox.

3. Oops. Bad idea. How do I uninstall IE 7?

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:

  1. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs .
  3. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7 , click it, and then click Change/Remove .

If you cannot find Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs , click Start , click Run , type C:\windows\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note : If this does not work, you may have your windows files stored somewhere other than the default directory (C:\windows). Substitute %windir% in place of C:\windows in the above command string. To do this, you need to have "view hidden folders" enabled.

4. What is the phishing filter?

Microsoft has a description of this feature at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/09/09/463204.aspx

5. Why can't I see the File menu?

To maximize website viewing, the File menu is hidden by default. Most menu options can be accessed from the toolbar. To view the File menu simply click on the ALT key. To permanently display the File menu, go to the Tools icon on the upper right portion of the browser, click on the pulldown menu, and select Menu Bar.

6. What Lehigh-related services do not work in IE 7?

Presently the PALCI library loan system and the Wilson library products (including the Reader's Guide online) do not work properly in IE 7. If you need to use these services open another browser, such as Mozilla, or use an earlier version of IE.

7. Where is the refresh button in IE 7?

The refresh button is now green and to the right of the address bar at the top of the browser (see below):

refresh button

8. When I click on a link, nothing happens. Why can't I go to a new link?

In some cases, when you click on a new link the browser opens the new page in a new tab, rather than a new window or displaying the new page in the original window. Look for a new tab to the right of the original window tab.

9. Does IE have any accessibility features that will help out those of us with visual impairment or smaller monitors?

Yes! To learn about the "zoom feature" in both IE and Mozilla, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/ie7/zoom.html. For a full list of accessibility features go to http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/ie7/.
