Senior Scientific Director
Dr. Meredith Smith is Senior Scientific Director for Pharmaceutical Risk Management in the Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development Division of Abbott Laboratories where she is responsible for developing, executing and evaluating risk management strategies for a range of Abbott pharmaceuticals, including drug-device combination products.
She is also Chair of Abbott Women in Science, a 700 member volunteer organization committed to professional leadership development of women in science. Prior to joining Abbott in 2008, Dr. Smith was Director of Risk Management at Purdue Pharma L.P. Dr. Smith received her PhD in public administration with a focus on health services research from New York University’s Robert Wagner School of Public Service and completed her post-doctoral work in health outcomes assessment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Prior to pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Smith was employed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia where she worked on the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a federally funded, proactive health status surveillance system for state and local governments.
Dr. Smith has published widely in the peer-reviewed literature. She has served on several working committees for the Council for International Medical Organizations of Science (CIOMS) and is a co-author and co-editor of the CIOMS IX Working Group guidance Practical Considerations in the Development of a Risk Minimization Toolkit.
She is also a member of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management, and the Association of Women in Science. She serves as an appointee to the External Advisory Committee for the Masters Degree on Clinical Trial Sciences, School of Health Related Professionals, University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey and as a Board member of Waukegan to College, a non-profit college preparatory support program for disadvantaged youth.
