"Additional Goodman Campus Access Road"

In the fall of 2012, an interdisciplinary group of ten students worked together as part of the Integrated Learning Experience course to research the implications of constructing an additional road on Goodman Campus. The students focused their research in the following areas: environmental considerations, traffic and safety considerations and economic considerations. At the conclusion of their study and taking into account their analysis of the different considerations, the team proposed a design for the new access route as well as a tentative schedule for its construction. The team believes that if built, the addition road will allow for easier access to the University athletic facilities, especially for Interstate-78 users, as well as reduced traffic congestion during large campus events. Furthermore, construction of the road should help to alleviate overuse of Creek Road, thus, increasing safety of road users and Creek Road residents and will encourage the development of previously inaccessible land.
About The Group:
Alexa Baker is a senior civil engineering student from Bridgeport, West Virginia. Upon her graduation in May she will be working for Turner Construction in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has been an active member of Lehigh University’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders for the past two years and currently serves on the executive board as Project Manager. Alexa has also remained very involved in her sorority Alpha Gamma Delta serving as Philanthropy Coordinator her sophomore year and Green Chair her junior year and has participated in the freshman program Volunteer Experience for the past four years, acting as Program Coordinator this past summer. Furthermore, Alexa is a member of the honor societies NSCS and Phi Eta Sigma and is looking forward to being inducted into the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi this spring. Her main contribution to this project was the road design.
Alicia Lauver is a senior civil engineering student from Richfield, Pennsylvania. She is seeking employment after graduation in the areas of Hydraulic/Stormwater, Geotechnical, Land Development or Transportation Engineering. She is a member of ASCE, Engineers Without Borders, Reformed University Fellowship, club soccer, and a former member of Lehigh’s track and field team. Outside of her studies, she enjoys attending concerts, cinema, and outdoor activities. Her main contribution to this project was the road design and traffic counting analysis.
Hannah Stabolepszy is a senior civil engineering student from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Within the civil engineering program, she has specialized in transportation and geotechnical engineering, and would like to work in one of these disciplines when she graduates in May. Aside from academics, Hannah has been a very active member of Reformed University Fellowship, serving as events coordinator and Bible study assistant. She also is completing her second year on the Steel Bridge Team, this year serving as vice president. Another opportunity that Hannah has enjoyed is tutoring eight grade writing students, something that she has done for the last four years. Hannah also enjoys baking, running, and playing piano. In this project, Hannah played a primary role in the permitting and stormwater aspect of the project, as well as the traffic analysis.
Olivia Yearwood is a senior civil engineering student from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. When graduating in May she will be looking for a job based in Hydraulics/Hydrology or Construction engineering. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and Engineers Without Borders, working in programs such as CHOICES and participating in a design project based in La Fragosa, Honduras. Olivia also fences sabre for Lehigh’s Fencing Club and has served as secretary for three years. Previous engineering work experience includes working as a PennDOT intern this past summer as a field inspector. Interests outside of engineering include folk metal concerts, costuming, and participating in a Dungeons and Dragons group on campus. Her main contribution to this project has been geotechnical research and construction cost estimates.
James Guffey is a junior civil engineering student from Towanda, Pennsylvania. He is interested in the structural, land development, and transportation aspects of civil engineering. Outside of the classroom, James is an active member of Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) where he serves as an exec team member, as a Bible Study Leader, and as a worship team member. During his freshmen year, James was also a member of Lehigh’s Marching 97 band. In his free time, he enjoys playing the guitar, running, playing tennis, and playing ultimate frisbee. Upon graduation, James is considering applying to grad school to further his education in the field of civil engineering. His main contribution to this project has been research and design related to storm water management.
