Mayuresh Kothare, the R. L. McCann Professor and Chair of Chemical Engineering, has announced that, effective April 21, 2014, the department's name has been officially updated to "Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering," following a vote of the Lehigh University faculty.
"The chemical engineering profession has been greatly influenced by the progress and growing importance of the biological sciences within the core of chemical engineering," says Kothare. "Our graduates are increasingly hired by pharmaceutical and biomedical/biochemical companies and routinely require use of, and expertise in, biomolecular sciences. Our faculty research profiles are increasingly focusing on biomolecular research. No less an authority than ABET, the academic accrediting body in engineering, has required a biology class for ChE majors for quite some time."
"This new name reflects the modern direction of our field," he continues, "and will better position our department to be a national and international leader in providing a comprehensive research and educational portfolio."
