Lewis “Lew” Hay, III '77 '08P '11P was appointed in January 2014 as an Operating Advisor to private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. In this role, Hay assists Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in a range of activities, including sourcing transactions, evaluating investment opportunities and advising portfolio company management teams.
Prior to his position with Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, Hay served as Executive Chairman of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), one of the nation’s leading electricity-related services companies and the largest renewable energy generator in North America. Previously, he served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the firm, which he joined in August 1999 as Chief Financial Officer.
Under Mr. Hay's leadership, NextEra Energy, whose principal subsidiaries are Florida Power & Light Company, one of the largest electric utilities in the nation, and NextEra Energy Resources, was consistently named number one in its industry on Fortune magazine's list of the world's Most Admired Companies.
Mr. Hay is a director and former chairman of both the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the association of U.S. shareholder-owned electric companies, and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), which encompasses all U.S. commercial nuclear operating organizations. Mr. Hay is also a director of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).
Mr. Hay serves on the board of directors of Capital One Financial Corporation, Harris Corporation, and WellPoint, Inc. He is a member of the Business Board of Advisors at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, and a member of the Presidential Consultation Committee of Carnegie Mellon’s Energy Futures Institute. In 2011 and 2012 he served as a member of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.
Mr. Hay received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1977 and a Master of Science degree in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1982. He and his family reside in Palm Beach County.
