Hay, Lewis III

Lewis “Lew” Hay, III is executive chairman of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), one of the nation’s leading electricity-related services companies and the largest renewable energy generator in North America. He was appointed to his current role effective July 2012 and will serve until his retirement, which is planned for the end of 2013. As executive chairman, Mr. Hay serves as chairman of the board, to which he was appointed in January 2002.

Mr. Hay served as chief executive officer of NextEra Energy from June 2001 through June 2012. He joined the company as chief financial officer in August 1999. In March 2000 he was appointed president of NextEra Energy Resources.

Mr. Hay received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University in 1977 and a Master of Science degree in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1982. 

Mr. Hay is a director and former chairman of both the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the association of U.S. shareholder-owned electric companies, and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), which encompasses all U.S. commercial nuclear operating organizations. Mr. Hay is also a director of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI).

Mr. Hay serves on the board of directors of Capital One Financial Corporation, Harris Corporation, and WellPoint, Inc. He is a member of the Business Board of Advisors at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, and a member of the Presidential Consultation Committee of Carnegie Mellon’s Energy Futures Institute. In 2011 and 2012 he served as a member of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

He and his family reside in Palm Beach County.
