Armouti, Nazzal

Nazzal Armouti earned his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1993 and was actively involved with the ATLSS laboratory before going on to contribute to structural projects including a terminal of the John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Princeton University swimming pool, the Alexander Hamilton Bridge in New York City and the Cross Bronx Expressway. He practiced engineering in the United States from 1988 until 1996 when he returned home to join the faculty of the University of Jordan as the chairman of its Department of Civil Engineering.

He served as Head of the Structural Engineering Division in 2000-2001 and 2003-2004 and Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering in 2001-2003 and 2004-2005. He is currently an associate professor of Civil Engineering and in 2005 was appointed Dean of Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II Academy of Civil Protection, a position in which he still serves. Armouti also continues to teach numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in civil engineering every semester.

Publications

In addition to his extensive professional engineering career, Armouti is also the author of a textbook titled "Earthquake Engineering: Theory and Implementation." The second edition of this text was issued in April 2008 in the USA by the International Code Council, and it is available in the USA under the umbrella of ICC. He has also contributed articles to the Journal of Structural Engineering and Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An International Journal.

Committee Memberships

Armouti currently serves as the director of the Center of Consultation at the University of Jordan. He was named an International Director to serve on the Board of International Directors of the International Code Council (ICC) in the USA. he serves on numerous committees on engineering codes and earthquake related issues and works as an international special consultant in the area of structural engineering, especially on earthquake-related projects.
