Master of Education (M.Ed.) and PA Instructional Level I Certificate

The elementary teacher intern program leads to an M.Ed. degree in elementary education and to an Instructional I Certificate that qualifies the candidate to teach in the public schools of Pennsylvania.
The program is designed for the college graduate who, as an undergraduate, specialized in a field other than education and who is capable of beginning his or her study of professional practice at an advanced level.
The focus of the program is the development of
- the intern's understanding of the aims and curricula of elementary or early middle level schools
- the purposes and methods employed in teaching children
- basic principles of research and testing
- the techniques of gathering and analyzing educational data
The intern
- completes a specified program
- bears major responsibility for a teaching experience in a supervised practicum
- participates in methodology seminars
being supervised throughout by Lehigh University faculty members. This program may be completed in 42 credit hours.
Additional Requirements
- 6 credits of Mathematics, 3 credits of English Composition, and 3 credits of English/American Literature at the undergraduate level are required for Pennsylvania Instructional Level I certification
- Passing scores on the PRAXIS (NTE) Tests are required for Pennsylvania certification (Instructional Level I and Intern certificates). It is recommended that the tests be completed prior to taking TBTE 463, Intern Teaching.
- Elementary subject guideline sheet to audit course work
- The Criminal Record Check is required before entering the schools
- The Child Abuse Clearance is required before entering the schools
- Tuberculosis test is required before entering schools

ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATION OPTION IN ELEMENTARY OR SPECIAL EDUCATION
This option option for additional certification is open to students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from Lehigh’s elementary education or special education master’s certification program.
Additional certification requirements must be completed within 5 years post-masters.
Students from either program may seek additional certification (i.e., in either elementary or special education) by taking the courses outlined below. With the approval of the student’s advisor, students may opt to work toward additional certification requirements during their master’s program (while pursuing their primary certification) and/or after completing their master’s degree.

POST-BACHELOR'S SECONDARY TEACHER INTERN PROGRAM
Master of Education (M.Ed.) or Master of Arts (M.A.) and PA Instructional Level I Certificate (42 -45 credit hours minimum)

The secondary teacher intern program leads to a master's degree in secondary education and to an Instructional I certificate that qualifies the candidate to teach in the public schools of Pennsylvania. The program is designed for the college graduate who, as an undergraduate, specialized in a field other than education and who is capable of beginning his or her study of professional practice at an advanced level. The degree and certification program requires 42-45 semester hours.
An integral component of the graduate degree program is a block of twelve (12) credits of advanced work in a teaching specialty. For example, a social sciences teacher may select courses from anthropology, psychology, and sociology; a science teacher may select course work from the natural and physical sciences. Other areas of emphasis include English, mathematics, and modern foreign languages. The graduate degree for those who complete the program will be an M.A. in secondary education when twelve credits are included from departments outside the College of Education. For those with less than twelve credits outside the College of Education, the degree will be an M.Ed. in secondary education.

- You must get clearance through the College of Education to register for Education classes as an undergraduate each semester. A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 is required. Meet with your Education advisor to plan your classes and to process your Education course clearance(s). You will be sent an email when you have been cleared to register for the class(es).
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 will be required for admission as a regular graduate student to the Elementary Education master's/certification program.
- 6 credits of Mathematics, 3 credits of English Composition, and 3 credits of English/American Literature at the undergraduate level are required for Pennsylvania Instructional Level I Certification.
- A maximum of 6 Education credits may be taken per semester while enrolled as an undergraduate student.
- A maximum of 12 credits may be transferred (by petition) from the undergraduate program and used toward the master's degree. Only courses taken beyond the B.A./B.S. degree requirements will be considered and must be approved by the College of Education and the Registrar's Office.
-Methods courses will be dictated by area of certification.
-Sophomore Year: Complete a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Clearance for TBTE 314 and TBTE 312. These forms must be completed before entering classrooms and are good for one year. Forms are located in the TLT Program Office, Room A108. Keep your clearances current throughout your program of studies in TLT.
-Passing scores on the PRAXIS Tests are required for PA certification (Level I and Intern certificates) in all subject areas. PRAXIS tests should be completed prior to taking TBTE 463, Intern Teaching.
-Senior Year. You must complete and submit a graduate school application including:
- Data Sheet
- Application Fee
- Essay
- 2 Letters of Recommendation (NOT from TLT Faculty)
- Non-Lehigh Undergraduate Transcripts
for admission to the graduate College of Education in Elementary Education. The application deadline is December 1. If you plan to apply for scholarship funds from the College of Education, funds are limited and are not guaranteed for your fifth year of study. Most scholarship funds terminate with bachelor's degree.
