"Typically, treatment for children and adolescents with ADHD and related behavior disorders has focused on reducing their symptoms and disruptive classroom behavior.  It is equally important to directly address their academic and peer relationship difficulties, because many times when academic and social functioning is improved, behavior control also improves.  Further, this allows us to focus on building strengths rather than just reducing deficits."

Improving school outcomes for students with asthma: The role of school psychologists.

Abstract:
Pediatric asthma accounts for more missed school days than any other childhood disorder and may impact the behavior, academic, and psychosocial functioning of students suffering from this chronic illness. Schools have recently been identified as logical and practical environments for promoting public health, and school psychologists are in a unique position to serve as advocates for these at-risk students. The purpose of this poster session is to present information on pediatric asthma and its disproportionate impact on students from low-income and minority backgrounds, address findings from current literature on asthma and school outcomes, and describe school-based interventions to improve health and school outcomes for this at-risk population. Session participants will gain knowledge and advocacy skills to effectively support and ensure the educational success of students with asthma.
