Disruptive behavior in preschoolers: Behavioral and home contributions on verbal ability.
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine the relative contributions of behavioral and home environmental variables on concurrent verbal intelligence among preschoolers with challenging behaviors. A sample of 244 children between the ages of 24 and 48 months from various parts of the country participated. Characteristics of inattention, impulsivity, and over activity can influence many areas of a child's life, and may specifically cause difficulties in the development of language and academic skills. Various aspects of the home environment, such as socioeconomic status, parental occupation, and quality and quantity of stimulation and support, also impact intellectual development. Results indicate that aspects of the home environment account for significant amounts of variance in expressive communication.
