What is the role of the general education teacher in the RTI approach?

  • To design a learning environment that promotes responsive instructional techniques and that maximizes instructional time for all students;
  • To become proficient in progress monitoring procedures, such as curriculum based assessment;
  • To become proficient in the documentation of progress in determining student response to intervention;
  • To gain access to training in evidence-based interventions;
  • To work collaboratively with other professionals in the design and delivery of services;
  • To participate in continuing professional development activities (National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities, 2002).


What is the role of the special education teacher in the RTI approach?

  • To assist general educators in the design of interventions, selection of appropriate instructional materials, and in evaluation of student progress;
  • To provide consultation in assessment and instruction as a member of the data-based decision team;
  • To participate continually in professional development (National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities, 2002).
