July - August 2007
Central Dauphin School District

This summer was busy and productive for the Central Dauphin School District. In July, select teachers and administrators from the Phillips, Lawnton, and Rutherford elementary schools attended the Governor's Institute at Penn State. During the weeklong conference, teachers attended trainings in effective reading instruction and intervention. We also spend time discussing the implementation of MP3 at Lawnton and Rutherford and planned for maintenance at Phillips. Lawnton and Rutherford teachers had the opportunity to hear about the skills groups experienced pros. Finally, each school had time to meet with the MP3 staff to review data and identify school-wide goals for the coming school year and to plan instructional strategies to meet goals. We accomplished a lot of weork and also enjoyed the evenings at the Penn State Arts Festival.

In August, the teachers from our three MP3 schools attended trainings at PaTTAN. Training in specific interventions, including Road to the Code and REWARDS was offered, and teachers also had time to meet within grade levels across schools. This provided further opportunity for the Lawnton and Rutherford teachers to learn from the Phillips teachers' experiences. According to feedback, teachers found this sharing session particularly helpful because they were able to hear more about instructional practices for benchmark students. The teachers also learned about progress monitoring and data-based decision making during the August training days.

It was a busy summer, but the hard work of the Central Dauphin teachers and administrators will help ensure a smooth start tot he 2007-2008 school year in September. Their students are sure to appreciate their hard work and dedication this summer!
