21st Century Leading and Learning Skills:
"Middle Schools Making it Happen"

A quality that distinguishes a middle school from a junior high school is the notion of shared leadership. Instead of a top down, hierarchical model, middle schools strive to share leadership with the goal of teaching consensus through collegial relationships. Of course, the principal is still the key leader, but all members of the school community - teachers, students, and parents are encouraged to assume leadership roles. This is why "leading" is one theme of this year's conference.

The other theme is "learning" obviously the primary mission of any middle school. In this era of testing and technology there are many challenges - insuring that each student can have success, that "no child is left behind," all while preparing young adolescents for 21st century technology in a climate that is sensitive to the fragile nature of these young people.

Come learn how some of your colleagues are attempting to meet these challenges!
