This Pennsylvania Department of Education approved program is designed for educators who are interested in assuming a position as a Principal. In addition to course work in:

  • Organization and Leadership
  • Management Functions
  • Curriculum and Supervision
  • Addressing the Needs of Diverse Learners

students must complete a year-long principal internship. (Fall & Spring only)

In order to be certified as a principal in Pennsylvania, students who complete this program must also have:

  • A U.S. teaching license and five years of successful school experience at an accredited school
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Pass the PRAXIS test in Education Leadership: Administration and Supervision (#0410)

ADMISSIONS
Guidelines for applying for Principal Certification

  1. Student Clearance Checks: This form needs to be signed and dated for your application to be considered complete.
  2. All applicants must have earned a master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  3. Students with a master's degree in education may take as few as 15 credits to fulfill certification requirements. The number of credits required will be determined from prior course work reviewed by submission of prior transcripts with your application.
  4. All students are required to take EdL 400 and Educ 493 through Lehigh University.
  5. Pennsylvania requires that all applicants must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. All students must hold a state-side teaching certificate.
  7. All applicants must have 5 years of successful school experience at an accredited school.
  8. All students must pass:
    • The PRAXIS test #410, Education Leadership: Administration and Supervision.

  9. All applicants must fill an application for certification form obtained from the Office of Educational Leadership at Lehigh University.

OTHER STATES
It should be noted that students may apply for certification through other states once they have completed the required course work. This process is called certification through transcript review. For details, please contact the specific state that you are interested in.

A minimum of 37 credit hours are required.
