Challenging Behavior in Young Children: Preventative Strategies and Solutions Tuesday, February 8, 2011
6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center

Five nationally renowned childhood behavioral disorder experts provided a comprehensive overview in areas ranging from social skills and inclusion to communication and family supports. The evening presentation was moderated by Lehigh's Dr. Gary M. Sasso, Dean of the College of Education at Lehigh University. This never before assembled panel of experts provided a rare opportunity to look at childhood behavioral disorders from a multiple of perspectives leading to better understanding and effective strategies.

Panelists:
    • George DuPaul, Ph.D. is a professor of school psychology at Lehigh University’s College of Education. Dr. DuPaul’s primary research interest is the treatment of individuals with (ADHD) attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and related behavior disorders.  Specifically, he conducts research on school-based academic and behavioral interventions for youth in K-12 settings; early intervention for young children at-risk for ADHD; and the assessment and treatment of college students with significant ADHD symptoms. He also has interests in health promotion and pediatric psychology; having directed student-led studies related to nutrition education, asthma, and psychopharmacology.
    • Edward G. Feil, Ph.D., is currently a Senior Research Scientist at Oregon Research Institute. His research has focused on incorporating Internet technology into the delivery of evidence-based interventions to hard-to-reach populations.
    • Mary Louise Hemmeter, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at Vanderbilt University. Her research focuses on effective instruction, social emotional development and challenging behavior, and translating research to practice.
    • Phil Strain, Ph.D. is a professor of educational psychology and psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver. His primary research interests include: a) intervention for young children with early onset conduct disorders; b) remediation of social behavior deficits in young children with autism; c) design and delivery of community-based, comprehensive early intervention for children with autism; and d) analysis of individual and systemic variables affecting the adoption and sustained use of evidence-based practices for children with severe behavior disorders.
    • Brenna Wood, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the special education program at Lehigh University’s College of Education. Dr. Wood’s research is in the area of early childhood special education. Her current interests include positive behavior supports in home and early childhood settings. In particular, she is interested in function-based interventions that include elements to address language delays or deficits in early academic skills.
