Providing Support and Mentoring for School
Leaders
In today’s public schools, issues that range from disabilities compliance
to standards-based testing, building safety to teacher effectiveness, converge
at the door of the often-sole school principal. School leaders today need
the guidance and experience of fellow school leaders as well as the exposure
to the most current knowledge of effective leadership.
Lehigh University’s College of Education and Pennsylvania’s Colonial
Intermediate Unit 20, a state-funded educational unit serving scho

in Northampton, Monroe, and Pike Counties, launched a new initiative in the
2003-2004 academic year to help address the leadership needs of current school
administrators – the Colonial Scholars Leadership Academy. This distinctive
program currently provides support to 23 principals and assistant principals
who fine-tune vital leadership skills through tailored professional development
and the on-going support of trained mentors.
