| Manipulation
of Antecedents involves making changes to
environmental variables that are associated with
problem behavior. Antecedent interventions change
the triggers that set-off problem behaviors. Antecedent
interventions may include, but are not limited
to the following: |
Curriculum modifications |
Modification of response requirements for academic
tasks |
Choice-making during instructional activities |
Modification of task difficulty |
Incidental teaching |
Alternative Skill Training involves
teaching socially appropriate replacements for
problem behavior and/or teaching skills that will
help the student cope with or prevent difficult
situations. These interventions may include: |
Communication training |
Social skills training |
Self-monitoring (of behavior or academics) |
Academic skill practice |
Relaxation and coping strategies |
Problem-solving |
Self-management |
Modification of Consequences involves
making changes to the events or responses of others
that directly follow the behavior. Consequences
can either reward or punish a behavior. Examples
of interventions that modify consequences include: |
Reinforcement of a behavior other than the target
behavior (differential reinforcement of other behavior) |
Reinforcement of a behavior that is incompatible
with the target behavior (differential reinforcement
of incompatible behavior) |
Non-contingent reinforcement delivered on a time-based
schedule |
Behavioral contracting |
School-Home notes |
Teacher praise for appropriate behavior |
Self-reinforcement |
Modification of when rewards are provided (reinforcement
schedules) |
Response cost |
Lifestyle Changes involves
making broad modifications in the student’s
school and/or home life based on student preferences,
interests, and long-term needs. Examples include: |
Enrolling the student in school clubs |
Matching student curriculum to interests (e.g.,
academic versus a vocational oriented program) |
Helping the student establish friendships with
peers |
Assigning an adult mentor or peer buddy |
Increasing student participation in community activities |
Helping the student pursue a hobby or sport |
Facilitating in school and community inclusion |
