Edward S. Shapiro, Professor in the school psychology program and
director of the Center for Promoting Research to Practice received a U.S.
Department of Education grant Project MP3: Monitoring Progress in Pennsylvania
Pupils – A Multi-Tiered Model for Progress Monitoring from Preschool
through Grade 4. The emphasis of the project is on demonstrating
how a multi-tiered model designed to identify children at-risk for reading
problems will be implemented from preschool (age 3) through grade 4 in six
elementary schools and their feeder preschool programs across two diverse
school districts. The project involves a partnership between Lehigh University’s
Center for Promoting Research to Practice, the University of Pittsburgh, the
Pennsylvania Training and Technical Association Network, and two school districts;
the Uniontown School District and the Central Dauphin Area School District.
The three year grant is in the amount of $1.2 million.

and Dr.
Ageliki Nicolopoulou, associate professor of psychology were also
awarded a subcontract to conduct program evaluation as part of the U.S.
Department of Education Early Reading First – Program awarded to Community
Services for Children, Inc., who provide Head Start programs in the Lehigh
Valley. The Early Reading First program is part of the President's
"Good Start, Grow Smart" initiative designed to transform existing
early education programs into centers of excellence that provide high-quality,
early education to young children, especially those from low-income families.
In particular, Early Reading First targets the development of early literacy
as a mechanism to prevent later reading challenges in children at-risk for
academic skills problems. The three year grant totaled $300,000.
