Cirleen DeBlaere

"We exist in a society that pressures individuals with multiple minority identities to choose between those identities ("Are you a lesbian woman or Latina?"). The insinutation being that a single identity must be paramount. At any given moment, one or more identities may feel more salient, but they are all present all of the time. It is critical that we acknowledge the intersecting nature of multiple minority identities; the idea that each identity informs and shapes the others in a unique and powerful way. "

If your question does not appear below you can contact the Program Director, Arpana Inman at agi2@lehigh.edu for further assistance.

QuestionDo students have time for an enjoyable life while they are in this program, or is it just work, work, work?
AnswerStudents do have an enjoyable life while they're in the program. One of the most important things to do, especially in a rigorous graduate program, is to take time for yourself. You can do it, too, with the help of time management, acknowledgement of your limits, and a good work ethic while your head is immersed in the books!

QuestionWhat do students do about getting financial aid?
Answer First, students typically apply for scholarships and/or assistantships from the College of Education. In order to be eligible for these and ANY other form of financial aid from Lehigh, you MUST fill out the appropriate Financial Aid form for the College of Education. Call the College of Education at (610) 758-3231 for more information, including deadlines!

Since 1999, all doctoral students, and many master's students interested in receiving assistantships have obtained one either through the College of Education or throughout the university. Also, students can apply for tuition scholarships for the academic year as well as for summer session classes.

In addition, graduate students in the College of Education usually apply for Stafford Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) which can be awarded up to $18,500 per academic year. The amount of the award is calculated based on your income, your Lehigh scholarship and/or assistantship funds, and any grants or merit awards that you have obtained outside of Lehigh.

Keep one thing in mind: You can officially apply for federal educational loans ONLY AFTER registering for your courses. So, you must first register through the Registrar's Office (or online), and then you can begin the rest of the process with the financial aid office. The process itself can be confusing, so call the Financial Aid Office with any and all questions, (610) 758-3181.

QuestionHow successful are students in getting financial aid after the first and second years in the programs?
Answer Students can apply for assistantships and scholarships for their entire graduate career. After the first year, students can continue to apply for assistantships throughout the university and/or find other sources of aid in the surrounding community. Stafford loans may also be available to students after the first year. The financial aid office (610 758-3181) is helpful for questions about federal educational loans.

QuestionWhat are your main housing options at Lehigh University as a graduate student, and what are the price ranges like in the Bethlehem area?

Some additional options and price ranges may be found at The Morning Call newspaper's Web site. Graduate students who wish to live on campus at Lehigh may apply to live at the Saucon Village Apartments, which are located about 2 miles from lower campus.
