Ph.D. in Conseling Psychology (APA Accredited) Six Overarching Goals

SIX OVERARCHING GOALS

  • Thorough grounding in the basic core areas of psychological science.
  • Professional-level preparation for psychological intervention and practice, including individual and group counseling and therapy, career counseling, multicultural counseling, and supervision.
  • Professional-level training and preparation in psychological assessment and diagnosis, including personality and intellectual functioning, and the ethical use of psychological tests and inventories.
  • Consideration of the ethical, legal, professional, and social issues and contexts affecting practice as a counseling psychologist.
  • Acquisition of the skills and attitudes consistent with the practice of counseling psychology in a culturally diverse society.
  • Capability to conduct and evaluate psychological research studies.

PREPARATION

In addition to the above minimum threshold requirements for preparation as a psychologist, the CP program holds certain expectations for its students in the field of counseling psychology. Counseling psychology combines scientific understanding of human behavior with a positive mental health approach that attempts to maximize human potential.
