RESEARCH
Dr. Spokane specializes in the transdisciplinary study of person-environment interaction in work and urban community settings across cultures. His most recent research focuses on the relationship of architectural features of the built environment to social behavior and health in Hispanic communities. Results from an 8 year longitudinal study suggests that (a) diversity of building use affects Hispanic children’s conduct grades in school, (b) features that promote social contact (e.g., porches, balconies, etc) are associated with improved behavioral health in Hispanic Elders. Spokane, a long time contributor to the vocational psychology literature in increasingly working in the field of public health psychology, disaster mental health, and the nature of individual and culturally driven responses to both extreme and damaged environments.
