RESEARCH

Dr. Cates' research explores how newer technologies may best be used to enhance education.  He explores technology’s use in both formal education settings (schools) and informal education settings (museums, public history sites).  In terms of formal education, he is evaluating the effectiveness of laptop initiatives in the schools.  That is, how ubiquitous computer access changes the educational experience.  In terms of informal education, Dr. Cates is investigating how museums and public history sites are using the World Wide Web to fulfill their educational missions. For both types of settings, he is exploring how blogs and podcasts might enhance both access and learning.
