Sounds very reasonable to me and so I was chagrined to hear that it doesn't work this way (at least not according to the rules my department operates under), when I recently invited a foreign graduate student studying at a US University to give a seminar talk at Notre Dame. Ironically it would be no problem to reimburse expenses if this same person were studying at a University outside the country... Stephan Stolz
